Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes -Post #6

Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes has been challenged and even banned in school and public
libraries around the country. Why does this book elicit such a strong response? Do you
think it is right for one person or group of people to attempt to dictate what an entire
community is allowed to read?

  1. I think it is banned because of all the religious points in the book. Also some of the topics, such as abortion, can start large debates. I wanted to stop reading at many times because of the religious points in the book, especially when Mark starts going. I don't think it is right for one group of people, or one person, to ban what someone should read. People should choose what they read, and if they know, or think, that they shouldn't be reading it, they should just put it down.

  2. I think this book is banned in some other libraries because the book gets into some very touchy subjects that set people on edge. Once you get into topics like abortion and Homosexuality you deal with other people's religion and political party. Also people might get offended by some of the religious comments in the book. Lets just say the two things that you don't want to make people angry about is religion and politics. Even though it is a very touchy book, I feel that people should read what they want to read and I don't think it's right to restrict people of doing that.

  3. I think this book is banned because of all the talk about religion and strong topics like abortions which can lead to arguments. I think this book may have lead to bullying in schools because if this happened to someone than they might think this book is about them and they could feel uncomfortable and people could make fun of them if it did happen to them. I do not think it is right to allow one person to dictate what people read. I think you should be able to choose what you want to read.

  4. I think that this book was banned because of how strong the points about religion and most of the topics talked about in the CAT class along with how intense Sarah's dad is when trying to find her. I understand why it has been banned but I do not believe that it should have been. Although it could be taken offensively to some religion groups or possibly political groups. I myself do not believe that it is reasonable for one group to dictate what is read or viewed in a community. I believe that just because one person believes something doesn't mean that other people have to follow what it is. I think that if there is an argument about letting students read this book that they should just put a warning on the book and let people decide for themselves what they want to read.

  5. I think the book was banned because of the subjects of religion and abortion. Those two subjects are big parts of the book and multiple strong beliefs are expressed about both of those topics. I think those two topics could easily cause arguments among readers. I think some of the beliefs expressed by the characters could not go off well with some readers, and that's why it was banned in some places. I do not think one group or one person should be able to dictate what a community can or can't read. I think if a person knows the content of the book and wants to read it, then they should be able to.

  6. I think the book was banned in some places somewhat because of the abortion. People have their own opinions on if abortion is right or not, and that could lead to an argument about the whole book. Also the many religious things in the book. People also have strong opinions when it comes to religion as well. I don't think that it's right for one person to decide, because what they think is wrong and should be banned, someone else could be perfectly fine with it. Everyone has so many different opinions, so I think they should know what the book is about and the content of it before they read so it doesn't have to be an argument on whether it should be banned from schools, libraries, etc. or not.

  7. I think this book isn't allowed in some schools and public libraries because some of the content is very strong and mature. This book talks about religion and abortion a lot. Of course, everyone has a different view on these two subjects and it could cause a big disagreement. I can see where someone might think that it would be better not to have this book in their library, but people have a right to read what book they want to.

  8. I believe this book has been banned from certain schools and public libraries because of the subjects spoken about throughout this book. Some examples of subjects would be religious points, abusive behaviors, and strong discussion topics from Mrs. Lemry's class. I do not think it is a good idea to ban the book at some schools and public libraries because a person should be allowed to read what they choose and make their own decisions.

  9. I think the book “Staying fat for Sarah Brynes’ was banned at certain schools and public libraries because the book did cover some heavy and controversial topics. Some schools may not want people to get the wrong idea on how things are in life, sucha as those bold topics in this book. Most people don't like talking about abortion, religion, abuse, and how different people are more popular. I think people should be allowed to read what they want but at their own precautions. Reading what you want and find to be interesting is important, no one should be not allowed to read a book just because someone else thought it wasn’t right.

  10. I think it was banned because it can get a little over the side because it talks about abuse, religion, and abortion. I think anyone can read it and no one should should have the right to not allow the book to a person. If they don't like it and don't wan't to read it they can stop reading it and put it away.

  11. I don't think it is right to ban the book because even if some people don't agree with some of the issues discussed in it doesn't mean others don't. The book probably has such a strong response because it is a powerful book. Lots of the things discussed in the book aren't normally talked about and maybe it scared people. Just because some people don't like the book doesn't mean they should ban it.
