As we begin the Advanced English 8 journey together, I want to learn more about you as a student. Please tell me about the best novel you read in middle school. This can be a novel you read for a class or on your own.
In your response, include the novel's title and author and give specific details about the novel and what you enjoyed about it. This will also be a great resource if you are looking for books to add to your summer reading list. Please post by May 28th.
My favorite novel from the past year was Wonder by R.J. Palacio. When I first began this novel I thought it would just be about a boy with facial deformity and his struggle to fit in, but as I read more I was surprised and delighted to discover that this is a novel about how everyone struggles to fit in and the difficulty that comes with growing up. One element that makes this novel my favorite is the use of multiple narrators. Because the story is told from multiple perspectives, this gives the story additional levels of meaning. The characters are likable and realistic and the lessons are ones that everyone can relate to no matter what their age.

DeleteMy favorite novel from this past year was the whole series of the Kissed By an Angel books by Elizabeth Chandler. All of these books are very interesting, amazing, detailed, and spontaneous in so many different ways. I would mostly recommend these novels to teenage girls, because they tell the rough journey of Ivy and Tristan's love through murders, crimes, demons, angels, and so much more. Some of the characters in this book can be related to you, while others can truly not. The events that take place in these novels catch you by surprise and are very intriguing, such as the characters being murdered, turning into demons, turning into angels, and much more. I have read all 7 novels in the series, and I loved them all. I didn't think any of them were bad for any reason. These are amazing books, and even though I don't really "love" to read books, I really enjoyed them and almost couldn't stop reading them. Ultimately, I love this series because each novel is exhilarating and there is always something mysterious involved in every action and event.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite novel from this year is the Pretty Little Liar series. This is a 12 book series and more books are coming out soon. These books are about a group of 4 girls in a small town. One of their best friends gets murdered and nobody ever got caught for the murder. Soon after the murder they begin getting texts from somebody that goes as A. This goes on for years and they still don't know who murdered their best fried. As the girls get closer and closer to the truth more and more bad things keep happening to them. This series combines many things that all teenage girls want to read about. It combine suspense, a love story, life in high school, friendship, and much more. When reading these books you always are thinking that you know exactly whats going to happen, but when you find out the truth you realize you would have never guessed that would have happened. When I read these books they were so detailed that you could picture everything that was going on, and it made you really feel like your in the book. This book has even been made into a television show, so if you like the show you will definitely like the books! I really recommend these books to anyone that like books that are very suspenseful.
ReplyDeleteSo far my favorite novel I have read this year would be The Lying Game. This book is by the same author as Katie's favorite series,(above)the Pretty Little Liars. This book is suspenseful and at some times even scary. The book is about a girl named Emma that is 16 and in foster care, one day the son of the woman she is staying with plays a nasty prank on her and she finds out she has a twin sister. She texts her twin and plans her escape to Arizona. Once Emma gets there she discovers that her twin, Sutton, seems to be missing and everyone thinks that Emma is Sutton. After a few days of living in her sister's fabulous life she gets a note saying that Sutton is dead and to keep playing along. Emma lives
ReplyDeleteas her sister and at the same time trying to secretly find Sutton's killer. This book is from a strange point of view ,and just helps add to the suspense, the person telling the story is Sutton as a shadow that can only see what Emma sees and only remembers tiny little bits from her old life in flashbacks. I would recommend this book to anyone that is okay with reading more than two hundred pages and enjoys a suspenseful read.
My favorite book ever, is a book called The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, and if you know me, I read A LOT, but it wasn't a hard choice for me by any means for many reasons. This book is fiction, and somewhat strange because it takes place in a well known city, but it shows a group of people called "Shadowhunters". Shadowhunters fight demons, but the demons actually appear somewhat normal, so for the main character, it looked like the shadowhunters were murdering humans. The main character is a girl named Clarissa "Clary" Fray, and the book starts with Clary and her best friend Simon going to a nightclub. She soon meets a shadowhunter named Jace, who starts luring Clary into the shadowhunter world. Too soon afterwards, Clary's mom goes missing, and their apartment was trashed by a demon. Jace brings Clary back to his family, and a character from a group of people named the "Silent Brothers" comes to look at Clary's mind. She finds out that she has a block in her mind, hiding away her shadowhunter memories. This book is really good, really sweet, and full of unexpected twists and turns. I recommended this book to a friend, and she was jokingly mad at me for recommending this book, since she couldn't focus on anything else but finishing the book. This book has elements of everything, and I recommend it to everyone who loves a good book, and round characters.
ReplyDeleteJeeze Jessy, the book was worse than just distracting, it was addicting!
DeleteI never mentioned any names Anna... though I have to admit, it was you! Talk to you later!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book I read in Grandview was Huge by Sasha Paley. Huge is about two girls named April and Wil, both are obese. Both of the girls are going to a fat camp called Wellness Fitness. Now April has been saving up her whole life to go here while Wil is having it handed to her on a silver platter, but the issue is Wil doesn't want to go. The book begins when both girls arrive at the camp. But when they get to their rooms, they find out that they are roommates. This is a huge problem for April because they have been told that their roommate is one of the key pieces to being successful at the camp. Another issue that happens is the 'popular' group of kids who look like they don't even need to be there. Now April wants to be one of them but Wil can careless. Then one of leaders drops the news that they will be put into groups, this excites April, but makes Wil annoyed. Once they announced the groups, April and Wil are put will two boys. In the groups, all of the kids there have to work together in competitions to wins prizes. Now, both of the girls have very different views as you can see, and this is also shown by the format. Each chapter is begins with a diary entry from either Wil or April, this adds character to the book. There is many conflicts, plenty of cliff hangers, and interesting characters. Huge is one of those book s that I couldn't put down.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book is Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. My mom had been trying to get me to read this book for years, so now I'm addicted to the entire series. This book is based in the future on a planet called Pern. The main character, Menolly, is the daughter of the lordholder of Half- Circle Sea Hold. Menolly wants to be a harper, but according to the Lordholder Yanus, Menolly's father, only men can be harpers. But when Petiron, the hold's only harper, passes away, the hold is left with no harper until Harper Hall, where all harpers are trained, sends a new one. Menolly's parents let her teach the children of the hold, under one condition, no tuning (Making up new songs). One day when Menolly is teaching, she unconsciously starts tuning and her father notices. He beates her and later when she cuts herself and gets poisonous fish slime in her hand, he has the healer heal it wrong so she can't play instruments. When the new harper comes, she isn't even allowed to sing. This is enough for Menolly. She runs away and soon impresses nine fire lizards, the mini dragons of the planet. She even survives threadfall. Thread is an alien that falls from the sky in Pern and eats anything cabon- based, such as humans, animals, and plants. I liked this book because it shows Menolly's struggle against her society and her parents discrimination. There are two more books about Menolly after Dragonsong, then another series that is about the dragonriders of Pern. I have read 8 books about the events in Pern and I'm still not done. This is definitely a good seires if you're looking for one that is already finished. Just a warning to anyone that decides to read it, these books came out in the 80's so some of the terms might be different.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from my middle school career is actually a book I read not too long ago in 7th grade. I read Hatchet (and the books that follow) by Gary Paulson as a group project in literature circle. The book is about Brian, a 13 year-old boy that is going through the Canadian forests in a small plane, just him and the pilot. He is visiting his dad (Who is an oil miner in Canada) because his parents are divorced. Before he goes, his mom gives him a hatchet to clip on his belt, and this plays a huge role in Brian’s survival later in the book. While in the plane, the pilot starts to show signs of pain and bad odors, and then he has a heart attack. This leaves Brian alone trying to crash land the plane in the wilderness. He finds a way to land in a lake. This is where the intriguing part of the book starts. While in the wilderness, Brian finds ingenious ways to survive. He rediscovers fire, scavenges for berries and other animals with weapons, and faces a natural disaster that is sure to wipe him out. But he survives it all, and builds a raft to bring him to the middle of the lake to recover the survival pack, including a radio transmitter, which contacts the plane station to rescue him.
ReplyDeleteI like this book because it teaches you a lot about the wilderness and other techniques in survival. Also, Brian is about my age so it teaches you a lot about courage. I liked hatchet so much I finished reading The River, which is about how Brian goes back into the wild with a psychologist that wants to know what it was like and so he can teach survival skills the right way. Then he gets struck by lightning and goes into a coma so Brian has to make a raft and float him down a river over 100 miles long to a trading post. Finally, I am currently reading Brian’s winter, which is about what would have happened if the radio transmitter in Hatchet did not work and Brian was stranded out there for the river. I hope you will consider reading these books.
My favorite novels from this year were the Conspiracy 365 series. This series includes 12 books, with each book representing a month. This series was written by Gabrielle Lord. The series started off when Cal Ormond was chased down by a very sick man on New Years Eve. The man told him "They killed your father. They'll kill you. You must survive the next 365 days," and with that an ambulance picked the man up and took him away. Cal is now constantly being chased by the law, for crimes he didn't commit, must figure out the truth about his father's death and about the priceless secret, before it along with him goes down in history. To add to it he doesn't know who he can trust to help or who is setting him up. Gabrielle Lord did an amazing job using imagery language, making the reader picture everything in their head. She also creates lot's of suspense for the reader and puts cliff hangers at the end of each book, drawing you back for more. I enjoyed how action packed it was throughout the entire series. I also liked the big mystery and all the little mysteries that would unfold all the time. I would recommend this book to any one who likes action- adventure and mystery.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from this year is The Day I Died. It is about this one guy who finds a little girl on the side of the road, and he thought she was lost, but it turned out she was dead. Then he had to take her shoes to her grave and finds about 50 other pairs. It turns out that he was not the first to go to her grave, many others had. Then alot of ghosts come out and tell him to stay with them so they can tell him how they died. So he did. This book was really good and I was always excited to get to the next story. I reconmend it to people who like ghosts stories.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite books I have read is "A Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. It's about 16-year-old Hazel, who has a terminal lung cancer. She doesn't go to school and her best friends are her parents. One day, they insist she goes to a cancer support group at a local church to help her make friends. Hazel hates support group, but is dragged along every week. One week a new boy, named Augustus Waters, shows up. Soon Augustus and Hazel are best friends. He gives Hazel a new perspective on life and what everything means. This isn't just an average cancer book. The kids in this book are trying to live their lives while they can. They aren't looking for sympathy from anyone. This book is amazing and it left me in tears. I highly recommend this book.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite books that I have read was " The Cirque Du Freak" by Darren Shaun. Its about a boy named Darren who goes to a freak show and meets a vampire named Mr. Crepsley and becomes his assistant in order to save his friend who was frozen by Mr. Crepsley's spider. Darren has to leave his family and friends to become his assistant. They go on wild adventures and face terrifying battles with their enemies(the vampeneze)and he also meets some new friends and enemies. I know it sounds a little weird and disturbing, but it actually is a lot better then it sounds. I would recommend it to anyone who likes the twilight series or anything that has to do with vampires. I really recommend this book even though it sounds really cheesy.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from GMS would have to be Gym Candy by Carl Deuker. It is about a boy named Mick Johnson who plays on his local high school football team. The challenge is he is stopped one yard short in a very important game that decided his teams placing in the state tournament. He is very mad that he could not beat the defender one on one so he decides to start working out to get stronger so this doesn’t happen again. Working out isn’t cutting it for him so he decides to take little amounts of steroids to help make him stronger. He then becomes “dependent” on them and it gets out of control. The reason I like this book is because it is very descriptive and helps the reader get a better sense of what is going on. It also uses “cliffhangers” to grab the attention of the reader and make them want to read more. I suggest this book to anyone looking for an AR book to read or to someone with a little free time.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite books that I have read in middle school was "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" by Ann Brashares. It was about four best friends, Tibby, Carmen, Bridget, and Lena. There are spending their first ever summer apart from each other and they stay connected with the help of a pair of pants from a thrift store. Even though each of the girls has a different shaped body, the pants fit all of them perfectly and look great on them. During the summer the girls send the pants around the world to each other. At the end of the summer they write on the pants about one thing they did in them. The book was very good and had two sequels. I recommend reading this book.
ReplyDeleteThroughout my time at Grandview Middle School, my favorite book that I have read would have to be "I'm Number Four" by Pittacus Lore. The book is about a 15 year old boy, named John Smith, that is one of the lucky nine to escape from planet Lorien.Planet Lorien was being wiped of its natural resources by evil Mogadorian. Each of the nine children were given a protector and a special power. The powers develop over time and when they reach their full potential, their fate is to go back to planet Lorien and kill the Mogadorians so they can restore their home. The nine aliens are connected by a charm that states what order they have to be killed in by the Mogadorians. If the order is broken it they cannot die.
ReplyDeleteJohn and his protector, Henri, take refuge on planet earth. John acts and looks like a normal person, but when he senses that number three has died he retreats to a small town in Ohio called Paradise. In his time there he flies under the radar trying as hard as possible to stay unnoticed. The book is filled with many twists and turns involving new friends, mogadorians, and maybe even a visit by another alien who traveled from Lorien with John. I won't give away too much considering I highly recommend you read this book and unravel all the plots and mysteries behind "I'm Number Four".
One of my favorite books from my years at Grandview would have to be "Shelter" by Harlan Coben. This book is about a 16 year old boy named Mickey Bolitar. Mickey has lead a tragic life, he has experienced his fathers death, his mother is in rehab, and he now lives with his Uncle Myron, whom he is not quite found of. Since he recently moved in with his uncle he has to now attend a new school and with a new school comes new friends. Mickeys life seems to be taking a turn for the better when he meets Ashley, but mysteriously one day she just disappears. Just as things are starting to get strange, Mickey has an encounter with the "Bat Lady", a creepy old women who no one has ever seen. Along Mickeys journey to find Ashley he discovers secrets about his past, meets new friends, and reveals who the Bat Lady really is. This Book is action packed and full of surprises around every corner. I felt like I had a real relationship with the characters and I could really connect with their thoughts and feelings. With a twist ending, this book truly amazed me and I couldn't put it down. I hope you consider reading this book and enjoy it as much as I did!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite series I read over the course of 7th grade was the Conspiracy 365 series written by Gabrielle Lord. In this series Cal (the main character) is chased down by an escaped mental patient and is told that he has to hide for 365 days and that his fathers death was not an accident. Cal does not believe him but he was right and people try to sink his boat and lots of crazy things happen to him. He then runs away from his family and decides to solve his family mystery that his father dies researching. He ends up trying to go to Ireland where he is wanted by the police and being chased by gangs who are after the treasure in the family mystery. This is a very exciting series and I strongly recommend it to read over the summer.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite series I read while at Grandview was The Baseball Card Adventure books by Dan Gutman. In the series the main character Joe Stoshack also know as "Stosh" has a power where he can travel through time with a baseball card. When he touches a card a tingling feeling goes into his hand and up through his body until he disappears. He first figured out he had this power when he was cleaning out a neighbors attic and found a Honus Wagner T-206 card. In the one I am currently reading he went back to meet Jim Thorpe with a kid from his school that he doesn't really like but he claimed he is Jim's great grandson. Jim Thorpe is a famous Olympian who won the decathlon and pentathlon but had his medals stripped because he got paid for playing baseball, which back then the Olympics were only for amateurs. The first time they go back they go to a time that was after his medals were stripped and he was working as a construction worker during the Great Depression. Then, they have to find a card with a date that was before his medals were stripped. When they go back again they find out how mean his manager is and how bad he really is at hitting curveballs. I like these books because they teach me about history along with a good story. I recommend these books for anyone that wants a good quick read over the summer
ReplyDeleteMy favorite novel from Grandview was Matched. This book is from a series of three; Matched, Crossed, and Reached. Matched is about a girl named Cassia who lives in a place where the society controls everything. They even choose who you marry and the ceremony they decide this at is called the Matching Ceremony. Cassia is matched with one of her best friends Xander. When she goes though to look at his file on her port, which is like an iPad, another guys face comes up. She knows him too, his name is Ky. Ky was never even supposed to be put into the Matching Pool because he is an aberration, which is a person that is discriminated by the society. Cassia has to choose either the guy the society chose for her and the one she thought she would be marrying all along or rise against the society and choose Ky.
ReplyDeleteThis book is an amazing book, along with the other books in the series. They keep you interested throughout the whole story and you always want to keep reading. I recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure and a love story. I hope you read this book!
My favorite novel from Grandview is The Underdogs by Mike Lupica. In the book 12 year-old Will Tyler takes matters into his own hands when the town has run out of money and can't fund it's 12 year-old football team. The town, Forbes, PA, was once a thriving community with a very successful shoe factory, Forbes Flyers. Much of the town's population was employed through the factory so when it went out of business Forbes lost jobs, money and population. Will has been the go-to football player on the team since he started playing and his passion for the game keeps his faith in recovering the football team alive. I was drawn to this book because I have enjoyed Mike Lupica's other books and just noticed this one in the library. When I read The Underdogs I found out it wasn't just another sports book, but a book about overcoming a different type of adversity. This book also displayed perseverance in the fact that sometimes you have to try everything possible to get what you want. This book would be good for anyone who likes sports with a little more of a story. I hope if you like sports books you have already read this but if you haven't, you still can.
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty big book nerd so its hard to pick my favorite book, but I love reading mystery books that keep you guessing and are fast paced. One book that I read was called Accomplice, its not very long but i enjoyed every second of it. Accomplice is about to perfect A students trying to get into collage. Chole and Finn are best friends they have good grades and do tons of community service, but its just not enough for collages. There tired of just good people and good grades so the girls decide to attract attention in a different way. Chole and Finn decide to stage Finn's disappearance. When news stories come knocking on Choles door asking about Finn its just the attention they wanted. So Finn decides its time to come back and save herself. But when you have such a perfect plan it doesn't always turn out they way you want, even perfect things can take a turn for the worst.....
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book I have read at grandview would have to be "I Do!" By Melody Carlson which is the fifth book in the Caitlin O'Conner series. Caitlin is in her senior year of college and her boyfriend from high school asks her to marry him. She says yes and it seems all fine and dandy at first then she comes out of her daze. She realizes her soon to be mother in law wants a big fancy wedding when all she wants is something small inexpensive wedding. She soon realizes at one point she will have to tell her soon to be mother in law what she actually wants. But she never knows if she will get the chance. Her wedding may end up as someone else's dream wedding
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book was Calico Joe by: John Grisham. This book is Paul Tracey and having to live with his abusive dad. His dad was a pitcher in Major league baseball who had an attitude and liked to throw bean ball at other players. Joe Castle possibly the best player ever only got to play one season. He was insanely good to the point wear pitchers didn't even want o face him. But Warren Tracey (Paul's dad) had other ideas he decided to bean ball him in the side of the head an nearly killed Joe. Joe never played baseball again. Eventually all the bad years of drinking and smoking caught up with Warren and he got very sick. Paul wanted Warren to apologize to Joe before he died so they went to Alabama and went to find Joe Castle. If you want to find out if Warren apologizes to Joe you should read this book it is amazing. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports novels.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from middle school was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is about a country in North America that is divided into 12 districts. The main character is Katniss Everdeen, a girl that lives in District 12, the coal mining district. Every year there is a drawing of two kids above the age of 12. The two kids compete in the hunger games. In the drawing, Katniss's sister, Primrose, is drawn and Katniss volunteers as tribute for her sister. She has to compete in the hunger games and try to survive. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action novels.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book was "The Knife of Never Letting Go" by Patrick Ness. It's the first book in the "Chaos Walking" series. This book is about Todd Hewitt, who is the only boy left in Prentisstown, which is located on the settler planet of New World. Everyone in New World has a disease that causes them to hear each others every thoughts, and there are no females left. When Todd finds a girl, Viola, he is forced to run from Prentisstown's citizens. This is my favorite book because it was full of suspense. At the end of every chapter, there was a cliffhanger that keeps you reading, forcing you to be unable to put the book down. The author also put so much feelings into every page, so you feel what the narrator, Todd, feels. I recommend this book to people who like action, suspense, and/or adventure books.
ReplyDeleteAn amazing book I read in middle school was Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick. The book is about Alex, a seventeen year old girl. When you first meet her, she is alone in the Michigan wilderness running from her brain tumor, when she meets Jack and his cranky 8 year old grandchild, Ellie. They are holding a normal conversation when the Zap hits. The Zap takes out every computerized gadget, kills millions, and turns half the people who survive into zombies. Jack is killed, but Ellie and Alex survive, although they aren't the same as they were. Together, they set out to find out what happened, get help, and all the while avoid zombies who would like them for breakfast.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind reading 450 pages, can stay with a book for at least the first 15 pages, and loves a great book!
My favorite book that I read in middle school would have to be Conspiracy 365 series by Gabrielle Lord. Its about a teenage kid (Cal) who is trying to solve his great family mystery. He gets a warning that he has to survive the next 365 days. Cal's dad died the year before trying to solve the same mystery. Cal is going up against unlikely odds with his own mom not liking him anymore and having two of the cities top criminals going up against him. He meets new friends that help him along the way. Also some of his family is lost. I strongly recommend reading this series to find out if cal solves his families mystery.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read this summer would be Vespers Rising by Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson. It is about The first Cahill (Gideon) who is trying to make a antidote for the Black Death but instead makes a potion that make you almost invincible. But as king Vesper notices that Gideon is very fast and strong he goes to investigate. Meanwhile Gideon is giving his sons and daughters potions that will make there special skills even more conveniate. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery.
ReplyDeleteThe best book I read the year in middle school was the whole Conspiracy 365 series written by Gabrielle Lord. It's about a teenager (Callum or Cal) who tries to decipher an old family mystery. A crazy man warned him he has 365 days to survive. It's the same man that he later discovered was one of his dad's friend from Ireland. Cal's dad died the year before trying to solve the mystery. Cal is up against two of the leading criminals in his city. Cal meets some friends that help keep him safe and help him solve the huge family mystery. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a book full of action.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book I read in 7th grade was the whole "Young Bond" series, by Charlie Higson. The books follow James bond throughout his teenage years in England. There are five books, each with its own unique adventure. Some of the storylines overlap into other books in the series. The books are very action packed. James does not intentionally try to get into trouble or bad situations. But he might as well have, because no matter how hard he tries, danger and excitement always find him. It's like its written in his DNA. Whether it be fighting for his life with a spoiled girl in a deathly obstacle course on an island full of criminals (Hurricane Gold, book 4), or battling a near insane man trying to create a super soldier( SilverFin, book 1), he is always fighting for survival. I like the series because it is very action-packed and the stories develop quickly. I think there is a good balance between action and, well, not action. I think the books stay true to the classic James Bond personality. The books are 300-400 pages long each. I would recommend the books to any James Bond fans or anyone who likes action.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read the past year was "Getting Over Garrett Delaney". It is about a girl (Sadie) who falls in love with her best friend (Garrett). However, Garrett goes off to a summer camp, and calls Sadie to tell her that he has fallen in love with someone else. Sadie is torn apart, and needs her friends, more than anything, to help her get over Garrett.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this book to any girls.
-Calli Battis
One of the best books that I read in 7th grade was "Hope was Here", written by Joan Bauer. The main character in the book is Hope, a waitress. Hope learned at a very young age about survival considering she nearly died as a baby, has never really known her mom well enough, and the fact that her aunt (Addie who she lives with) is a cook and never stays in the same spot very long. The book takes place in rural Wisconsin, where Hope and Addie moved to from Brooklyn. Hope was just starting to fit in in Brooklyn and now she doesn't know what to think. All this changes when the owner of the new restaurant decides to run for mayor. This is when Hope discovers her true calling.
ReplyDeleteI have read many novels since I have been in GMS. One of my favorites has to be "My Life in Pink and Green" by Lisa Greenwald. The book is about a girl named Lucy Desberg and her family with their struggling local pharmacy. In the book, the local homecoming queen comes in the pharmacy with a major beauty disaster. Lucy is a natural-born problem solver so she had just the plan. Lucy offers her styling tips and techniques to fix the homecoming queen's beauty disaster. After she helped the homecoming queen look better than ever, there was a big line before any local dance, bar, or bat mitzvah. Lucy knew she had to figure out a plan to save her family's pharmacy before it was to late. The only problem about trying to save it was that Lucy was a 7th grader. Lucy knew that no one would really take her seriously, but age doesn't matter when you have a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI have read many different novels at GMS but one of my favorites was Matched which is followed by Crossed and Reached. Matched is about a girl named Cassia and she has always trusted the government's choices for her life. The government controls everything, they even determine the man she will marry. On the night of her 17th birthday, she nervously boards the air train with her parents. It will take them to her Match Banquet where she will be paired with the perfect mate for her. Her best friend, Xander, assures her that everything will work out for the best. After a dinner Cassia barely eats, the ceremony begins. When her name is called, she stands and watches the large screen. But it remains blank. A voice tells her that her match is actually in the room. To her relief, and happiness, the Society has picked Xander as her mate. It is rare that one's mate is found in the same city and neighborhood, but Cassia is thrilled. Her excitement doesn't last long, though. The following evening, when she has the house to herself, Cassia watches the microcard of her match. At first, Xander's picture appears, and she listens to a recorded message about him. Before she can change the screen to read about their Courtship Guidelines, the picture of another boy she knows, Ky Markham, appears on the computer screen. Then she has to make a choice to marry Ky or Xander. I loved this book so much including all of the other books in the series. Every chapter keeps you interested and I would recommend this book to anyone who liked the Hungar Games and who likes adventure or a romance story.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read in 7th grade was, "Football Genius" by Tim Green. The book is about a boy named Troy, who can predict any play before it happens. Troy steals a ball from a professional football player, named Seth Halloway. He has to apologize for stealing and give it back. Seth came into Troy's house to get the ball back. Troy was watching a football game and began to tell Seth all the plays that were going to happen, before they happened. After the game Seth told Troy to keep the ball. Seth went to his coaches and told them about Troy and how he could predict plays before they happened. Troy's life changed forever.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite novel from GMS was a book called "Schooled". This book was written by Gordon Korman and their were many elements that I liked about it. This book was about a boy named Capricorn Anderson who lives in a community separate from the rest of the world. At this community it is just Capricorn and his grandma. One day when his grandma breaks her hip, Capricorn is forced to face the world while his grandma recovers. Cap stays with a woman and her daughter. This book really gets interesting when Cap goes to public school. Since Cap has lived in the community his whole life, he has been home schooled his whole life. Cap has never eaten pizza, never played dodgeball, or even talked to anyone but his grandma. The school votes him class president because they think it will be funny, but it turns on them. People start to like Cap and his hippie ways and in the end, he ends up liking school himself. The end is for you to find out, and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about realistic fiction.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite series from GMS is the Hunger Games series, written by Suzanne Collins. My favorite book of the trilogy would be the first. I enjoyed reading this book because its futuristic vibe was so different than what I was used to reading, it intrigued me incredibly; It was nearly impossible to put the book down, to be honest. Long story short, it is about a country based far in the future, with twelve districts and a capital; The capital being the dominant figure. The capital is an incredibly wealthy, extravagant city, while the twelve districts are suffering from poverty. In the past, the twelve districts tried to rebel against the capital, and lost. So in payment for their sin, each district has to send two tributes, a boy and a girl, to the capital into an arena where they fight to the death. So our story begins when a girl from district twelve, Katniss Everdeen, has to make a decision when her 12-year-old sister is picked to fight: watch her sister die (most likely) or volunteer as a replacement tribute. I highly recommend this book; It is a quick, exhilarating read that will keep your mind busy!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite books that I have read at Grandview are the "True Colors" series. All of the books have teenage characters that face some type of conflict. The types of conflict are what every teenager in high school go through. Each main character is a strong Christian. They use their faith and belief in God to help them with their struggles. My favorite book in the series is Burnt Orange. It's about a friendship between two girls who struggle with an addiction. I liked this particular book because it kept me intrigued and I could not put it down. I would highly recommend any of the books in this series because most teenagers can relate to the content.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I have read in my three years at Grandview is probably Divergent by Veronica Roth. It is the first book in the series. There has been another book released named Insurgent, There is also talk about a third book coming out in October. In Divergent, when you are 16 you have to make a choice of what faction you want to live in for the rest of your life. You have 5 choices. Erudite, the intelligent. Abnegation, the selfless. Amity, the peaceful. Candor, the honest. And Dauntless, the brave. There is also a place for people who get kicked out of their faction or don't have one. The faction-less. Beatrice Prior has taken the test to help you make her choice and she gets an answer that few may get. She is Divergent. That means her test results gave her different factions as her answers. She was born into Abnegation along with her brother Caleb, and her mom and dad. She makes a choice no one thought she would. This book has been my all time favorite. It might be a huge book, but i finished it in a day! That's how good it was. I strongly recommend this book to anyone.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from GMS is Snatched by Pete Hautman and Marry Logue. This book is part of the Bloodwater Mystery series. I loved this book because I couldn't put it down it took me less than two days to read it. I was really into this book and the suspense killed me so I had to finish it. Also the book had lots of humor in it and at random serous parts the author made the action more lively and hilarious. It is about Roni Delicata and Brian Bain solving where and what happened to Alicia Camden a classmate that was beaten and snatched. I really recommend this book to people that love suspense thrillers and that have a sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I have ever read from Grandview is probably the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. The first book is Divergent and personally I think that Divergent is the better book than the second book. The reason I like this book better is because it had more action and more a story line other than Insurgent which kind of had an unexpected story line/plot. Another reason why I thought Divergent was the better book is because Divergent was more action packed and Insurgent wasn't as action packed and it was not as interesting as Divergent. Although Divergent was my favorite book in the series both books were amazing and I loved both.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I ever read at Grandview is probably "Million Dollar Throw" It's one of the main books in one of the sport book series Grandview has to offer. It's about a boy and his best friend which is a girl. His best friend has this rare disease that affects her vision. Now, I don't remember all the specific details about the book because I read it in 5th grade. I do remember that in the end the boy makes the throw, earns a million dollars, and with the money he earns from making the throw he uses a lot of it just to find a cure for his best friend's rare disease. (If he hadn't used the money to cure her she would have been blind for the rest of her life and she was only about 12.)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read this year is Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick. The book is about a girl named Alex who starts off the book by going hiking to get away from her brain tumor. She meets Ellie and Jack when the Zap hits. Everything goes out of control. Deer jump off a cliff. Jack drops dead. Electronics stop working. It kills millions, and some who survive are changed into zombie-like creatures. Alex and Ellie survive, but Alex isn't the same anymore.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this book because it is action packed, fast moving and holds your attention right from the beginning.
My favorite book that I read at GMS was called It's kind of a funny story, written by Ned Vizini. The story follows 16 year old Craig and his battle with severe stress, depressing and the contemplation of life and death. When one night, he thinks he wants to end it all but calls a suicide hotline instead, he ends up admitting himself into an adult psychiatric center at the hospital in his neighborhood. When he gets there, he thinks that he has made the wrong decision but cannot be released for a certain amount of days. This proves to be the best thing for him. In his time at the hospital he makes new friends, falls in love and learns what he really wants and what will make him happy again. One of the many reasons I loved this book was that it was one of the funniest books I have read about the least funny of topics! Another reasons I loved it was that the author was writing from personal experience, having spent 6 days in a mental ward himself, it gave the book an in depth perspective on what really goes on in places like that and what kind of people you could meet there. I absolutely adored the way it was written! The story line was perfect, leaving nothing to be confused about, I also loved at Craig was experiencing the same type of problems that teenagers my age and maybe older deal with too! It makes the book really easy to connect with.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I have read at the 3 years I've been at Grandview Middle School was "Kissed by an Angel," by Elizabeth Chandler. This is a book series about a girl that believes in gaurdian angles and dates a guy that is on a swim team. Tristan and Ivey have a loving relationship of a lifetime, but it stops once they get into a car crash. During this car crash, Tristan dies and returns as an angel. What Ivey doesn't know is that his presence is still there and he's trying to protect her from trouble. You will not want to put this unpredictable book down. I love this series and I would definitely suggest it to others.
ReplyDeleteThe best book that I read in middle school is the book "Sweet Venom" by Tera Lynn Childs. If you love Greek Mythology and adventures this is a book for you. It is about triplets Grace, Gretchen and Greer who are descendants of Medusa. They are destined to fight and send monsters back into their own world by biting them with their fangs. I loved this book because Grace, Gretchen and Greer have such different personalities. Grace is very techy and wants to fit in at her new school. Gretchen has been fighting monsters for a long time so she is tough and always ready for a fight. Greer is rich, snobbish and always prim and proper. This trilogy will keep you on the edge of your seat and I recommend it to everyone.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book I read this year was Matched by Ally Condie. In Matched, the society matches each person with another to live the rest of their life with. Cassia is matched with her best friend from her same town, which is really rare. When Cassia looks on her microcard to learn more about Xander, another face pops up and she starts to wonder. Cassia eventually falls in love with the mysterious person, Ky, which the society highly disapproves. I loved matched because I never wanted to stop reading it or ever put it down. I also liked that the characters were so unique and how the author, Ally Condie, wrote about them. Everyone has a different personality which made the book very interesting and a good read.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read during my middle school years was True Legend by Mike Lupica. It was a difficult choice since I read a lot of books that I really enjoyed, but I choose this book because it always kept me interested and I loved the subject. This book is about a basketball superstar named Drew. He got a lot of gifts and grades that he didn't deserve, because he was so good. Then, one day he met a playground legend named Donald. Donald had the same spoiled life as Drew, until he went to college and it all stopped. One day Donald moved to Europe because of his failing grades and supposedly died in a fire. The thing is, Donald didn’t die. This is a story of how Donald changed his life and saved Drew from repeating his mistakes. This story is inspirational and makes me want to be a better person!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book of these three years was Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo. Heaven Is For Real is a book about a sick little boy named Colton, who is on the verge of death during his surgery. During Colton's surgery his heart stopped beating for a couple of seconds. When Colton had Awaken he claimed of seeing Jesus on the cross with "red marker" on his hands and feet, also seeing his unborn sister. His father Todd Burpo had said there was no way his Colton knew all these things at age 4. I love this book because it is about after life and things that can happen to you when you pass. Some people believe this story as a fiction or non-fiction book. I believe non-fiction.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book at GMS would have to be, someone like you by: Sarah Dessen. I loved this book because I love reading about older teenagers. I loved the main characters they were such good friends and stood by each other through everything. The book was about a girl who got pregnant and the guy who go her pregnant died. The girl’s best friend stood by her and helped her through everything. She helped at prom, and helped to try and keep the secret. Everyone hated her because she got pregnant but her friend stood by her no matter what. It was a very interesting, realistic story that pulled me in right from the start.

ReplyDeleteA favorite book of mine from the past year would be "The Line". I'm not sure how to exactly describe it, but it was EXTREMELY good and left a lot of good cliff hangers. Its based in a future alternate society, but other then that I can't seem to find good words to explain it with. Honestly though, it was totally a favorite of mine.
