Hope was Here- Post #5

Toward the end of the book, G.T. and Hope cut a branch from one tree and graft it onto another, allowing the two to merge and grow together as one. How is this natural process symbolic of the way that Hope's life has merged with the friends she's made in Mulhoney?  What other symbols are woven into this story?

  1. I think that the branch symbolizes her relationship growing with G.T. as well as Braverman by growing together can becoming more than friends. I think that another symbol was Tulip changing her name to Hope because that shows that hope can get you through any tough situation. One more symbol was G.T. having leukemia shows that even when you are weak, you can still be strong and make miracles happen.

  2. The tree that was cut off to merge and grow with the other tree symbolizes Hopes life. It symbolizes Hopes life because she merged from Brooklyn to Mulhoney. Another thing that it symbolizes is the friendship that she, G.T, and Braverman have. Also it symbolizes the change of her name from a meaningless name Tulip to and powerful name that is Hope.

  3. I think that the branch symbolizes many things in Hope's life. It symbolizes that different people can get to know each other and grow a strong relationship together. I think that the branches symbolize the strong, and still growing, friendship between Braverman, Hope, and G.T. Hope changing her name from Tulip is anothing thing that the tree symbolizes because that is one thing that Hope and her mom disagreed about and Hope got through it.

  4. The natural process isn't only symbolic of how Hope merged with Mulhoney but it shows Hope's entire life. Because her mother didn't want her, Hope was 'cut' from her mom and 'grafted' onto Addie, who supported her and willed Hope to survive. Without Addie, Hope wouldn't have come through just as the branch couldn't live without the tree. It shows how Hope and Addie moved from place to place and were able to settle down and live their lives. The branch also shows that new bonds can grow anywhere and they only get stronger with time. The friendships Hope has with Braverman, G.T. and Flo are examples of this. One last thing it symbolizes is how life goes on. Life didn't stop when the branch was cut from the tree, but it continued in a different way. Likewise, Hope's life won't stop because of the loss of G.T. It will simply continue on in a new direction.

  5. This process symbolizes how her relationship with everybody in the town grew. With people like
G.T, Braverman, Anastasia and even her Mom grew. This may also symbolize all of the lessons
she learned and how she developed during her time there. The two trees growing together represent the strong bonds she has made with everybody. Some other symbols are the changing of her name from Tulip to Hope. A name with real meaning.

  6. In the book, they referenced the grafting symbolizing her and G.T.; two totally different people, learning to grow together; as a family. But I think the tree grafting also goes for the bigger picture: Addie and Hope, with the community of Mulhoney. Addie and Hope are people from the city, who have travelled all over the country for work; and the Mulhoney community: small, close knit town. Many have lived there all their life. So when the two opposites met, they started growing together, to the point where they were one.
I think the author’s main point is that having hope can make such a difference, and that it goes a long way in life. The author was clever enough to have Hope (the girl in the story) symbolize hope (the noun). Hope never gave up, no matter how much she wanted to. When it seemed that they had lost, she kept on trying until they won.

  7. The natural process is symbolic because the two branches are beginning to grow into one, just like Hope's life is starting to grow into the lives of her friends, family, and mostly, G.T.'s. Another symbol that I picked up throughout the book is when Hope changed her name from Tulip. This, to me, is important because her new name has more powerful meanings than Tulip.

  8. I think that the grafting symbolizes the merging of Hope and G.T.s' families and lives, and the reason why is because Hope and G.T.s' lives are becoming intertwined because G.T. and Addie got married. I think that another symbol in the story is that before Hope came to town, the town was controlled by a mayor who didn't even consider the welfare of the town's citizens. But when Hope came into town, it also seemed like she had brought new hope to the town and it's citizens.

  9. I think the grafting meant many things symbolically. Such as G.T. and Addie getting married or the big city girl Hope movie to the quiet little town of Mulhoney, Wisconsin. (Which, sadly, Mulhoney doesn't exist. I checked when I read this book in 5th because my uncle lives in Milwaukee.) Another thing I thought that was quite symbolic was the hopeful ending that showed that all the people working at the diner were all good friends and were willing to help keep the happiness of G.T. in the diner even though he wasn't there to help anymore.

  10. When G.T. and Hope cut off the branch to merge it with another, it meant something to both of them. This represents how many bonds were made when Addie and Hope moved to Mulhoney. There were some romantic bonds between Hope and Braverman to G.T. and Addie. There were other more friendly bonds made with Flo, Hope, and Addie. But to another point, there were family bonds made with G.T., Addie, and Hope. These all prove that a relationship can happen anywhere with anyone, just like the trees. But there wasn't just one symbolic process in the story, look at G.T., he proves no matter how much you can do, you give it all. Mulhoney has given Hope many lessons on love, hope, and strength.

  11. Grafting the two different trees together is like a symbol of how Hope has come to be a part of Mulhoney. Mulhoney is like the tree and Hope is the branch that became part of the tree. It shows how Hope and Addie came to Mulhoney and became a part of it even though, symbolically, they are from a different tree. Another symbol in the book is the clown nose. It sort of represents happiness during hard times. Everytime Hope used the clown nos she was sad or upset for some reason.

  12. Taking the branch of one tree and grafting it on another symbolizes many things in Hopes new life in Mulhoney. First, that G.T. has taken Hope and put her into his family. Second, Hope is becoming better friends with her workforce such as Braverman, they had plenty of arguments before the became good friends. One other symbol that was woven into the story was the Ship in the raging sea. It symbolized that sometimes life can be rough but you will still stay a float.

  13. Grafting the tree branch symbolized relationships and a new life in Mulhoney. Hope didn't start in the same place as everyone or know everyone until a time period, and the friends she made eventually got closer to her. For an example, G.T. was just a good friend now he is her "father". Another example would be Hope and Braverman, they argued until they became very good friends. The clown nose was another symbol woven into the story. Using the clown nose made her go from upset to everyone including herself in a good mood, laughing and smiling.

  14. The tree branches symbolized growing relationships, and a good new life in Wisconsin. It symbolizes sliding into new surroundings. Another symbol is G.T, in the beginning of the book says "the good thing about my leukemia is that I don't need a hairnet.", that phrase symbolizes the fact that you can find good in the bleakest, darkest corner.

  15. I think that the branch symbolizes the way Hope's life has merged with the friends she's made in Mulhoney by the way that Hope came from somewhere or in this case a different tree, and became apart of their family, so the grafting of a new branch onto the old tree symbolizes that Hope is now apart of the family in Mulhoney. I think that another symbol in this story because it stands for being brave and confident when there are people around you that are ruining your happiness. Another symbol similar to this is G.T.'s cancer. This is because of how strong he was and how brave he was to stand up for himself and to fight for what he believed in even when the rest of the town doubted him.

  16. I think the branch symbolizes how Hope's life has changed in Mulhoney. It shows how she is growing to become a part of Mulhoney and how she's making new friends. I think it also symbolizes G.T.'s relationship with Hope because they started as completely separate people and grew to be closer with each other. I think that other symbols in the story are Hope and G.T. Hope's name represented her personality and how you always have to be hopeful. G.T. is one part of the story that is very symbolic. He has cancer and is fighting for life, but he still has a positive outlook on life. He realizes he has to make the best of life because he might not have much life left.

  17. I think that the little branch is a symbol of Hope's life. The tree is a symbol the whole community and the two merging together symbolizes that she is starting to become part of the community. Another symbol was that G.T. had leukemia and he showed courage, even though he was weak, by running for mayor and being strong through a hard time.

  18. The tree is symbolic because it shows that they started out as separate individuals without a need for each other but now as they grew to love each other, they realize that they are a family coming together like the branches. Another symbol is when Hope engraves “Hope was here” under the counter at the diner. This was symbolic because it was different than the other times she had carved it because this was her home and she was coming back.

  19. The tree is a symbol of how Hope and G.T.'s relationship. I think this because they start out not knowing each other at all and then they started to merge into one- creating a relationship-. I also think that it stands for Hope started out as one going into a different community with new people and she knew basically no one. Then throughout the book she became closer and closer with the community and the people within it.

  20. I think the branch symbolizes the relationship that she had with G.T. and how it grew. Also with everybody else, especially with Braverman. The branch was just one symbol when really there were many more. Fist, there was when Hopes name was Tulip and she wanted to change it to Hope. Or when G.T. showed a lot of courage when he was pushing through with his leukemia. Also, how when Hope left engraved under the counter in the diner "Hope Was Here". Those were some symbols of how Hopes life had changed in Mulhoney.

  21. I believe the tree symbolizes G.T. and Hope's relationship in a unique way, saying it showed how Hope and G.T. became two in one. Two in one, meaning, two personality's and/or individual's, combining to make one. Hope has opened up and became closer to Braverman and Lou Ellen. Helping Lou Ellen with her child Anastasia, and coming closer with Braverman. Making Hope have unique and symbolical relationships.

  22. I feel like the branch symbolizes what Hope had gained from the past. Her mother didn't want her so that meant that her mom was cut from the picture but then G.T and Addie came in and they became stronger as a family. G.T had a symbol when he has leukemia put he still fought for what he believed in and he never gave up and as he gained confidence he became stronger throughout the story.

  23. The basic definition of grafting is to join or unite, and I think it really symbolizes G.T. and Hope’s relationship. It shows that even though Hope has only known him for a short period of time and he is not her biological father they can still unite together and become a family. It also represents Hope and Braverman’s relationship because they are two very different people and they are both very guarded, but they let their guards down for each other. They are now in a great relationship. I also think that G.T. has a symbol, which is that even though he is weak and broken he can still fix the community and do great things for people. He risked his health and life to help the community get out of the grasp of Eli Millstone. I also think Hope’s feelings about small towns is a symbol because at first she was a big city girl and thought she couldn't ever live in a small town and like it, but her feelings have mixed together and it shows that you can live anywhere and still be happy as long as you are around people you love.

  24. When G.T. grafted the tree and the tree branch together it symbolized his relationship with Hope and how at first they were both strangers yet they soon became like family over time. Another symbol was G.T.'s fight with leukimia and how no matter how bad it got he never gave up hope, he fought till the very end. This was a symbol because it showed no matter how hard anything got you never have to give up hope. You can try for as long as you believe you can.

  25. The tree branch that was grafted with the tree symbolizes that even though Hope, G.T. and all her new friends in Mulhoney, didn't come from the same places they have come together to form one big family and that their relationship will continue to flourish. This is not the only symbol in this story, G.T. running for mayor also symbolizes something. It shows that even when you are weak and broken you can still bring others together and make them strong. Another symbol is that she changed her name from Tulip to Hope which has greater meaning to it and represents Hope starting over and becoming the person she wants to be.

  26. I think the branch symbolizes Hopes whole life. It symbolizes when Hope, G.T. and all her other friends, by how they all came together to help get G.T. elected mayor. Also when when Hope's mother gave her to Addie to keep instead of her because she did not want to keep Hope. Another example would be when Hope changed her name from Tulip, a name that meant nothing to her, to Hope which gave her hope to get through tough times. It is also symbolized when she merged from Brooklyn to Mulhoney. A finale symbol is how G.T. has leukemia and is very weak but keeps on fighting for the community and staying strong for his new family.

  27. In the beginning of the book she slowly started becoming closer to her friends at the restaurant, just as the branch slowly started merging to be apart of the other tree. Hope changing her name from Tulip is another thing that relates to the tree grafting. She slowly realized that “hope” was who she was and what she was for many people. Hope wasn’t Addie’s daughter in the beginning but like the tree, Addie and Hope grafted together.

  28. When Hope moved, she obviously didn't know anyone. But throughout the book and G.T.'s campaign she grew closer to everyone in the diner. At the end they were like one big family. And in the beginning of the book Hope was grafted to Addie because her mom left her. Also when she changed her from Tulip to Hope, it was her grafting into her new meaningful name.

  29. I believe that the grafting of the tree symbolizes the connection that Hope and G.T. have made. Hope spent a lot of time with G.T. during the process of his becoming mayor. After spending so much time with him, they formed a special bond that no one could take away. When G.T. said he wanted to adopt her, she was thrilled that she would have a dad right by her side. The grafting of the tree means their families merging together and becoming one. Another symbol of the book is Hope's name itself. Hope means confident and strong and that's what she shows the world through her actions.

  30. I think that grafting the tree showed Hope that she and the community of Mulhoney have grown a strong relationship. By supporting G.T. and his campaign she has made many new friends and long lasting memories. G.T. has helped Hope grow as a person and wanted to express the way he felt about becoming a family. Also by changing her name to Hope, she took on great responsibility and made many people's lives better. I believe that without Mulhoney or G.T. she would not be able to express her true identity and bring hope to everyone she meets.

  31. I think that grafting the two branches together symbolizes Hope's new-found connection with Mulhoney. Hope's growing relationships with G.T., Braverman and many others are also symbolized by this. The grafting of the branches also symbolized Hope (one branch) and Mulhoney (the other branch) learning to merge and become a family. Other life lessons in this book are to try to always look on the bright side of a bad situation.

  32. I think the grafting of the trees symbolizes Hope's and G.T's lives. They were two totally different people who ended up coming together and becoming best friends and becoming a family. Another symbol is that Hope brings Hope to most of the places she goes, especially Mulhoney. She brought Hope to G.T's diner and the rest of the town when she came their. One other symbol is how G.T fights his cancer throughout the whole book.

  33. I believe that the merging of the branches symbolizes Hopes life. It shows how much more she bonds with G.T. and Baverman. It also shows how she bonds from living in one place to another like how she just moved from Brooklyn to Mulhoney and is now adapting to her new life. Some other symbols might show how she is adapting to liking her mom more.

  34. I think the branches symbolizes Hope's life. It symbolizes her moving from Brooklyn to Mulhony. It also symbolizes her new relationships with G.T. and Braverman. An other way it symbolizes her name change from Tulip to Hope.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think the branch symbolizes Hope's life. It symbolizes when Hope, G.T. and all the other friends help to get G.T. elected mayor. Another example in when Hope switched her name from Tulip to Hope. A finale symbol is haw G.T. has leukemia and is very weak but still helps and fights for the community. Although the are many more symbols, I just named off a few of the best.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think the branch symbolizes Hopes relationships with G.T. and Braverman. Another example is her name Tuilp, she changed it to Hope because the meaning of hope is very powerful and can make it through anything.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think the branch most symbolizes that no matter the situation and the conditions, grow together and you can form a bridge of never-ending hope, as the trees demonstrated.
