Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes- Post #4

Author Chris Crutcher dedicates this book "for all those who finally stand up or themselves." Which characters learn to stand up for themselves? What has to happen to get them there?

  1. One of the charters who learns to stand up for himself is Mark Brittain. Towards the end of the book Mark stands up for himself when he tells the class that he was the liar not Jody. He admits that he told Jody to go have the abortion. He said that he was too scared to face what he had done. He also said he tricked Jody into thinking it was her fault. He then turned to Jody and said that he was sorry, really sorry. What happens to Mark to get him to the point of taking responsibility for his actions is his suicide attempt. What helps him to stand up for himself is the talk that he has with Moby, who encourages to stand up for himself.

  2. One character that really learns to stand up for himself is Eric because in the beginning of the story it talks about how scared Mobe was of running into bullies like Dale Thornton or Mr. Mautz. In the end of the book Eric learns to stand up to both those people and more including Mark Britain, and Virgil Byrnes. I think what got Eric there was all the tragic things that kept happening to the people around him and watching people around him be strong like Sarah, Lemry, and Ellerby. I think all these people helped him realize that he can be brave and stand up for himself too.

  3. Many characters in the novel “Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes” learned to stand up for themselves near or during the conclusion. Sarah Byrnes stood up to herself by trusting Eric completely when writing more about her emotions to him in the journal that he gave her, and she took his word to trust Lemry. Sarah Byrnes did not trust anyone after getting her scars, including Eric, but after a girl she met at the Sacred Heart Hospital hugged her, she realized that letting people like her gives her a chance to be less constricted from having to be tough and allows her to feel normal even with her scars. Mark Brittain stands up for himself by admitting that he lied to everyone about the abortion to Eric, then apologizing to Judy for the things he did. After attempting suicide, going to a therapist, and seeing Eric in the hospital, he learned that he was wrong. Eric Calhoune learned to stand up to for himself by not caring about how overweight he is. Before he met Sarah Byrnes, he was embarrassed about his body. When she allowed him to be her friend, his self-esteem grew, and over time, he started to care less about what others thought about him. These three characters grew significantly throughout the novel due to the events that happened to them.

  4. One character who learned to stand up for himself was Mark Brittain. He admitted that he had done some things wrong and that he needed to fix them. He learned this after he attempted to kill himself and saw Eric in the hospital, he saw that he needed to be brave and do what was right. Another character who learned to stand up for himself was Eric Calhoune. He learned to stand up to Virgil Byrnes and Mr. Mautz. When he saw all the things going wrong around him he knew he had to stand up for himself and Sarah Byrnes, when he fought Virgil, and helped Sarah Byrnes while she was in the hospital.

  5. I believe that all the characters in the book had a very hard time standing up for themselves. As small as Jody finally telling people about her abortion and how sad it had made her. Or as big as Sarah finally, stopping her dad from anymore harm towards her. However one specific character really surprised me when he finally stood up for himself; that person would be Mark Brittain. Now Mr.Brittain had a lot of crap going on in his life, it might not of been as bad as a father abusing you, or a girl who had done something she thought was so horrible it made her cry daily. But Mark did have a very strong opinion on things even if it wasn’t necessarily what he wanted to say but more what he had to say. Mark saw that this way of life isn’t what a person should want or how there life should be. But he didn’t just all the sudden figure that out it was a hard for him to finally stand up for what he did and for what he wanted his faith to be.

  6. Many characters learned to stand up for themselves, but none more so than Eric Calhoune. Eric stood up to Sarah when she was chewing him up for telling Lemry about her situation. Erik couldn't just sit around, waiting for things to happen, so he did what he thought was right. He had seen what Sarah's dad was like and the things he could do. This motivated Eric not to back down when Sarah started yelling at him and instead he held his own. Eric also stood up for himself when he met with Mr. Byrnes in school. Eric admitted that he knew where Sarah Byrnes was, but he refused to tell him. He then went as far as threatening Sarah’s dad to leave them alone and hope they kept their mouths shut. Sheer terror and seeing Mr. Ellerby and Mautz face off gave Eric the courage he needed to stand up for himself.

  7. By the end of the book there were many characters who learned to stand up for themselves, but one that stuck out to me was Eric. At the beginning of the story Eric was hiding behind Sarah Byrnes because he was to scared of everyone while Sarah Byrnes could stand up for herself and fight. But then Sarah Byrnes stopped talking so he had to do things on his own. When problems got in his way, he had to learn to stand up in fight for himself like when Virgil Byrnes tried to kill him, he ran for his life and didn't stop until Virgil reached him and put a knife to him throat. But, by the end of the book, Eric didn't need to hide behind Sarah Byrnes because he had learned to stand up for himself so someone else didn't. This proved that Eric had learned lessons on bravery and confidence that he couldn't do when Sarah Byrnes was always protecting him.

  8. To me, Eric was the prime example of learning to stand up for yourself. Instead of letting Sarah Byrnes protect him, he has to protect her from Sarah Byrnes' dad. Even if he got stabbed, he came out on top, and potentially saved Sarah Byrnes from more torment.

  9. Eric Calhoune really learned to stand up for himself by the end of the book. At the beginning of the book, Eric would only do what Sarah Byrnes would do, it was like he had no thought of his own. However, towards the end of the book, he started making his own decisions. When Sarah Byrne's dad was trying to get secrets out of Eric, he would not tell him what he knew. Also, when her dad was trying to kill him, Eric decided that his life was more important than Mr. Byrnes not knowing where Sarah was. Eric saved his life, and saved Sarah Byrne's also.

  10. I feel just about every character in the book had to learn to stand up for themselves one way or another in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. A few that stand out to me are Eric, Sarah, and Mark. Eric had to accept his body and not let others tease him to the point of distress. He learned to deal with it and in the end really didn’t care what people called him. Like Moby for instance. It Implies he is overweight and he learned to accept that. Mark had blamed Jody’s abortion on her for ever until he attempted suicide. That opened up his eyes and showed him how important life is. As soon as he told everyone what really happened with Jody and apologized, people learned why he was how he was all his life and he was reluctant enough to show his inward scars to prove it. Sarah had hidden her inward scars like Mark for so long and acted tough, but she really seemed like a nice person. She accepted who she was and knew what happened to her was not her fault and that she couldn’t have prevented it no matter what. Although others shied away from her she accepted that she really was pretty ugly but that it was not the looks that always count. It is also the person inside. To get them there they really have to realize how short life is and that if they hate themselves all their life they will be miserable till the day they die. Thats what I think opened up the characters eyes in the book.

  11. I think Mark and Eric learned to stand up for themselves. In the beginning of the book Eric was running away from all of the bullies like Dale Thornton, Virgil Byrnes, and Mark Britain. Towards the end of the book he no longer needed Sarah and Ellerby to stand up for him. He learned to not be afraid of them. During the process he got stabbed and made two new friends. Mark learned to stand up for himself when he got humiliated during Lemry's class. Then later in that class he took responsibility for what he did and said he was the liar not Jody.

  12. In the story Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, many people learn to stand up for themselves, but the one person who really changed in the story was Eric Calhoune. In the beginning of the story, Eric was a shy teenager who relied on the protection of his best friend, Sarah Byrnes. Then one day she abruptly stops talking. Eric has to learn how to stand up for himself. Eric realizes that it's up to him to protect himself from his antagonists. One of the main events where Eric stands up for himself without Sarah is the part where Virgil Byrnes was chasing Eric, trying to kill him. Eric realized that he can fight for himself after he got away safely from Virgil except for a shoulder injury. Throughout the book Eric learned he doesn't need to hide behind Sarah because he is strong and brave enough to fight for himself.

  13. IN the book staying fat for Sarah Byrnes, I think many of the characters stood up for them ,but the one that stood out to me was Eric. At the start of the story Eric was the fat kid who was picked on and bullied that no liked but the other outcast Sarah Byrnes who protected him from bullies like Dale Thorton. Then one day Sarah Byrnes stopped talking and Eric was left to fend for himself. While Sarah was in the hospital Eric stood up up to Mark Brittan in CAT class saying that not all people believe what he believes in and not all people are Christian. In another part Sarah Byrnes broke out of the hospital because she faked being sick and was on a mission to find her mother in Reno, Nevada. While on her mission to reno eric is back in his town Virgil byrnes savagely beets Eric does not tell him where his daughter is and stands up for himself. Eric realized that he didn't need a body guard like Sarah Byrnes he knows that every has courage you just need to find it to fight and stand up for your self.

  14. Throughout the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes I thought that a lot of the characters showed acts of standing up for themselves but the one I thought made the biggest difference was Eric. I thought Eric learned to stand for himself the most because in the beginning he got bullied and picked on a lot just for being fat and he often had to rely on his best friend Sarah Byrnes to put up with the bullies. Near the end of the book I think that Eric learned that he doesn't need someone to stand up for him because he can fight and stand up for his self.

  15. Many characters learned to stand up for themselves, but Eric stood out the most. He was bullied for his weight and didn't have many friends. With the help of Sarah Byrnes, he learned how to stand up for himself. He stood up for himself in CAT class against Mark Brittan. When Mautz falsely accused him, he stood up for himself. At the end, when Virgil Byrnes threatens and attacks Eric, he fights back. Throughout the book, Eric learns that he is capable of protecting himself.

  16. Many of the characters learn to stand up for themselves but one of the characters that really learns how to stand up for himself is Eric. He was bullied for his weight because was chunkier than most kids and was always kind of pushed around by Sarah Byrnes. He learned how to stand up for himself when Sarah Byrnes stops talking and has to figure out what happened. His CAT class also helped him to learn to stand up for his beleifs. He stood up for his beliefs against Sarah Byrnes about getting adult help. He also stood up for himself multiple times when Mautz falsely accuses him for causing Marks suicide attempt. Throughout the book Eric really learned to stand up for himself.

  17. A lot of characters in the story stand up for themselves but I think Eric really stands up for himself because he faced all those people who teased him for his weight. He pushed himself and he became skinny. Eric also became stronger when Sarah stopped talking to him and he had to face Virgil Byrnes when he threatens him. He realized he can't hide forever and so he had to face his fear in order to move on with is life and to help Sarah.

  18. A bunch of characters stand up for themselves in the story, but I think that Eric stands up for himself because he went to school everyday even though he gets teased about his weight. He got stronger, even though Sarah Byrnes stopped talking to him and when Eric faced Sarah's dad, Virgil Byrnes. He realizes that he can't hide from everyone forever, so he had to face his fear to be able to move on with his life and help Sarah out.

  19. Many people in this book learned to stand up for themselves including Eric, and Jody. Before when Eric saw Mr. Byrnes he hid and did his best to not talk to him. When Mr. Byrnes came after Eric, he stood up for himself and said “kill me, kill me”. He stood up for himself and wouldn't let Mr. Byrnes kill him with out a fight. Jody also stood up for herself by telling the truth. When the subject of abortion came up in Mrs. Lemry’s class Mark said that that you should not have an abortion and instead take care of the child. He was being a hypocrite, because he had made Jody get an abortion by herself and lied about it. He walked all over Jody and her feel bad about her self and her decisions. But one day in class she stood up for herself and ended the endless lies coming from Mark.

  20. Tons of characters in this book had to stand up for themselves, some more than others. From Mark admitting that he actually had made Jody get the abortion by having been humiliated in front of his class to Sarah finally standing up to her dad and putting herself out there to find her mom. Then there was Jody who finally admitted what happened with the abortion by having Eric talk to her and gaining her trust. Everyone in this book had to stand up for themselves because no one was going to do it for them.

  21. I think that throughout the course of the book, many characters stand up for themselves. Eric Calhoune stood up for himself and didn’t tell Mr. Byrnes where his daughter Sarah was, even though he threatened to hurt, maybe even kill him. Eric was scared but he stood up for himself even though he was stabbed and taken to the hospital. What caused Eric to stand up was his desire to help his friend, Sarah Byrnes with her problems with her dad. Jody Mueller stood up for herself when she told the class about how Mark Brittain was a liar and the story of her abortion. What caused Jody to stand up was that she couldn’t accept the fact that Mark thought the abortion was her fault.

  22. One character I thought stood up for himself was Eric. At the beginning he was scared of Sarah and Mr. Byrnes. One spot he stood up for himself was when he was in Mr. Mautz office and Mr. Byrnes walked in and Eric didn't break down and stayed strong. Another time was when he wouldn't tell Mr. Byrne's where Sarah was until Mr. Byrnes was about to kill him. Another person that stood up for herself was Jody when she told the class that she had an abortion and it was Mark Brittain's. Every person in this book at one point or another had to stand up for his/her self just not as much as others.

  23. There were many characters that stood up for themselves throughout the book , but I think the most notable ones were Eric and Jody. Eric didn't have just one problem, he had many, making it that much more difficult for him. One of his problems was his weight and how people made fun of him for it. He stood up to this by going to school everyday and trying to ignore it. Jody had one main problem, Mark Brittain. Jody stood up to this two times. Once when she told the class she had an abortion while Mark Brittain was arguing against abortion, and twice when she and Mark split and she started dating Eric. Eric had to get a friend, Sarah Byrnes, in order to get himself over his weight problem and Jody needed the class discussion about abortion. Standing up for yourself is key in this book and in real life. Everyone needs to do it sometimes.

  24. Throughout the book many characters learned to stand up for themselves; but one of the characters that stood out to me was Mark Brittain. In the beginning of the book Mark was telling people that abortion is wrong when really he made his girlfriend, Jody have one herself. He had tricked Jody into thinking that it was her fault. The reason he did this was because he was too scarred to face what he had done and what people of would think of him. Jody had confessed to people that Mark had made her get an abortion on her own. That night Mark had attempted suicide because he realized he was so sorry. Once he had recovered he came back told people what Jody had said was the truth. I think that telling people was his own way of standing up for himself.

  25. In the book many characters stand up for themselves but, the one that stood out to me the most was Jody. Throughout the book Jody hides behind Mark because she feel insecure about her abortion. In truth Jody should have stood up for herself against Mark and had the baby because she would not have had the shame of not doing what she wanted to do. The only reason Jody learns to stand up for herself is because she befriended Eric who also was learning to stand up for himself at the time. Eric learned to stand up for himself with people calling him fat and judging him when they don't even know him. People normally learn to stand up for themselves when people have there backs and help them through their problems.

  26. Throughout the story there where many characters that stood up for themselves. Out of all the characters in the book the one that stood out to me the most was Eric. In the beginning of the book he was always really scared of bullies like Dale Thorton and Mr. Mautz. Then towards the end of the book he had learned to stand up to him and even Mr. Mautz. After awhile everyone soon stands up for themselves in life. In the book Eric had finally stood up for himself.

  28. The person that had the hardest time standing up for himself was Mark Brittain. Because of his big Christian family everybody has big expectations for him. Eric and Ellerby don't help much when they try to humiliate him. I think the thing that finally changes him is when he has a drug overdose which almost kills him. I think his dad had a talk with him and told him something to make him feel better. One person I think never had trouble standing up for herself was Sarah Byrnes. She was always able to stand up to Dale and even her father. Its good to be able to do that.

  29. In the story I think that the characters that have learned to stand up for themselves Eric Calhoune, Sarah Byrnes’s and Jody. Eric stood up for himself by not getting pushed around by other people, and he stood up to Sarah Byrnes’s father even though he knew that her father was a threat to him. Sarah Byrnes’s stood up for herself by always having a good comeback to people who tease her about her scar face. Jody stood up for herself by standing up to Mark Britain, and talking about her abortion. They all had problems to overcome and make them stand up for each other.

  30. A lot of characters learned to stand up for themselves but Eric was the one who stood out the most. Near the beginning of the book Eric didn't do anything on his own and always let someone else push him around and do what they wanted him to, but at the end of the book Eric took control of his own life and didn't let people push him around. When Mr. Byrnes was asking where Sarah was, Eric would not tell him no matter what he did.

I think that by telling people it was his way of standing up for himself

  32. In this book I think many characters eventually learned to stand up for themselves, one of this characters is Eric. I think that Eric finally stood up for himself when Mr. Brynes threatened to hurt or even kill Eric for information about Sarah. Eric refused and insteed almost reveled what Mr. Brynes did to Sarah infront of Mautz. Even though Eric was eventually stabbed by Mr. Brynes, It was all worth it to Eric cause he finally found who he was and what he stood for.

  33. In this book a lot of people had to stand up for themselves. The one who I thought stood up for themselves the most was Eric. He didn't stand up for himself at first, like when people called him names and bullied him. That changed at the end when he did what he wanted and wouldn't let anyone take control of him, like when Mr. Brynes was threatening to hurt him if he didn't tell him where Sarah was. Eric stood up for himself at the end and did whatever he could to protect Sarah.

  34. I think that in this story Mark Brittain stands up for himself. In most of the story, Mark is the kid who thinks he is above everybody else because of his religion, but towards the end, after Jody tells him off about the abortion, he realizes that he needs to stand up to everybody, but mostly stand up to himself. He realizes that he needs to change his tell the truth about what happend. And when he tells the truth, he starts to slowly break off of his shell and realize that he doesnt have to be better than everybody.

  35. One of the characters that I thought that stood up for himself was, Eric Calhoune. At the beginning of the book Eric had Sarah stand up for him against the bullies, Dale Thornton and Virgil Byrnes, because he was overweight. Also, at the beginning of the book people called Eric, “Mobe” and that annoyed Eric. By the end of the book Eric just shrugs it off when people call him, “ Mobe” because he has accepted that name. Eric started standing up for himself by going to Dale's house to ask him questions about the scars on Sarah's face. In the past, Eric would have never have done that. When Virgil wanted to know where Sarah was, Eric refused to let him know, even when Virgil put the knife to his face. He did not want to let Sarah down, so he didn't tell Virgil were Sarah was until it was to late for Virgil to go find his daughter. Throughout the book Eric learned how to protect himself and stand up for himself.

  36. I think that a character that stood up for himself was Mark Brittain. He thought in the beginning of the book that he was more important than everyone because of his beliefs. When Jody tells the CAT class about her abortion with Mark he blames it on her., and says that it is all lies. Eventually he tells the truth and says that he was to blame. Also that he left Jody to get the abortion all by herself. He admitted and apologized to Jody about what he had done.

  37. I think that many characters in the book learned to stand up for themselves, but the biggest one for me was Eric. In the beginning of the book he didn't really stand up to the bullies. He went everyday having to deal with them, and he always just ignored them. Towards the end he realized he should have. He stood up and wouldn't tell Ms. Byrnes where Sarah was, until she threatened him. All the characters stood up for themselves in different ways, but I think Eric was the one that stood out the most.

  38. Out of all the characters in the book, I think Eric learned to stand up for himself the most. When Eric was a kid in middle school, he would hide behind Sarah Byrnes. As he got older he found himself with swimming. He started loosing some weight and made a couple more friends. I'm sure that boosted his confidence quit a bit. Around that time I'm guessing is when he started to stand up to bullies. At the end of the book you could tell Eric was defiantly a confident young man.

  39. I think Eric Calhoune is a character that stands up for himself in a classic way. As a child, he was an outcast, a misfit, Fat Boy. He begins standing up for himself when he becomes friends with Sarah Byrnes. He and Sarah stick together and go through jr. high together. When Eric starts swimming, and loses weight, its not so tough, but still, Eric and Sarah remain friends. And learn to stand up together.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think that Eric Calhoune out of all the characters really stood up for himself. He used be shy and timid because of his size, but finally joined the swim team and made some good friends and even got a girlfriend. By standing up for himself, Eric finally became friends with Dale and didn't try to blend in with the regular crowd. Even though he made new friends with new people, he still kept his relationship with Sarah. This shows everyone what kind of person he truly is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Out of all the characters, Eric Calhoune had to stand up for himself the most. Until he join the swim team and made some friends, Eric was always bullied about his size. Eric finally became friends with and didn't try to be an average person. Still, Eric kept his relationship with Sarah even though he has new friends. By the end of the book Eric was standing up for himself all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Eric stood up for himself the most because he was always behind Sarah as she fought off the bullies and was trying to stay as much out of it as he could. I think he got himself to stand up, was because he saw how others were being treated the same as him and Sarah.
