Compare and Contrast- Post #1

Both novels are told using a first person point of view.  Discuss the similarities that occur in the novels because of this point of view.  Also discuss the differences between the two narrators and how this shapes the details of each novel.  Use examples to support your ideas.

  1. The first person point of view caused both of the books to be focused from inside the main story. Both Eric and Hope are telling the story about what they went through with others to help G.T. and Sarah deal with the problem they faced. Although Eric and Hope were both outsiders, one of the differences between them was that Eric was able to control the fact that he was fat. He was able to become slim because swimming helped him lose weight. Hope wasn’t really as able to control how much she moved around. When Hope moved, she had to start fresh. She didn't know anyone and wasn't connected. Their attitudes were also very different. Hope was more active and she became involved by putting herself out there whereas Eric was more passive and sort of just bumped into Sarah and was pulled into her problem.

  2. This point of view allows us to feel the feelings of only the main character. So that is the character we know the most about. The thing that makes a character is their actions. For example I think Hope is more proactive because she reaches out to help the campaign. Eric is more reactive because he is self conscious about his body. But he comes out of that stage by the end. Something similar about the two is that they both strive to help others. They are always doing what ever they can to help. And for that they are liked by a lot of people. Hope helps G.T win his campaign and Eric helps Sarah Byrnes escape from her Dad. Because they helped others, there is a happy ending in both stories.

  3. When first person point of view is used, you can really understand the narrative character. You get their feelings and emotions more clearly and can practically live in the book though them. A similarity between Hope and Eric is that they both reach out to people in Hope's case it was GT and the campaign. In Eric's it was Sarah Byrnes and her life. On the other hand, each of their services were for different reasons. Hope needed to connect, to restart. Where as Eric needed to save his best friend.

  4. This point of view makes it very easy to get to know the narrators like how they feel and act. hope and Eric both try to reach out and try to help Sarah and G.T. help through their lives. The two were very different too, Hope had to move around the country and keep starting over. And Eric had to help get his best friend back.
