Hope was Here- Post #3
Writing seems to be very important to Hope - she writes poems, keeps a diary, and writes letters, even ones she doesn't send. Explain why you think writing is so important to her. Use specifics to support your response. Can you relate to Hope? When you write about an event, what does the act of writing compel you to do?
I think that writing is so important to Hope because she is trying to express her anger, sadness, and her life story. She wrote a letter to (I forget who) and explains that she is mad at him for taking all their money. I cannot relate to Hope by writing, instead I hold the anger inside and blow up when it gets too high. When I write though, the act of writing compels me to explain things in great detail. (Please do not assign short writing assignments.) If fell like I can be hidden from the truth and will not stand out while my voice is the words instead of aloud.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is very important to Hope because she tries to vent her anger in her letters as shown in the letter to Gleason (the guy who stole their money from the previous restaurant they were at before Welcome Stairways). Hope also writes to document her life, in case her biological parents decide to take an interest, like her scrapbooks that she showed G.T. I can relate to Hope because I also keep a diary, and I think that documenting your childhood is super important because you are only a child once. When I write, I feel like once I start I can't stop and I have to write down every single detail. Also, I have to write down what I thought about the topic.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is very important to Hope because it helps her keep the memories of the places she has moved from and to express her anger that she had with Gleason. She writes the letters and doesn't send him because she just wrote it to get her anger out. I can not relate to Hope because when I get angry I don't write it down. Plus I don't keep scrapbooks either. The act of writing doesn't really compel me to do anything to my writing because I'm not very creative, and imaginative.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is very important to Hope because it helps her express her feelings towards anyone and about everything. A specific example of her doing this is when she wrote the letter to Gleason. In some ways, I can relate to Hope, because I make scrapbooks, and I have a journal that I sometimes take my feelings out on. When I write about an event, the act of writing compels me to let loose and be specific on everything I am writing about.
ReplyDeleteI beleive that, to Hope, her writing helps her express her feelings. Whenever she gets agitated about the campaign, or angry about her mother, she writes it down to help her get rid of the bad, or express the good feelings. I cannot relate to Hope. I never express myself in ways like writing, or making scrapbooks, or writing a letter that I will never send.
ReplyDeleteHope writes to many different people, but never sends the letters. I believe that these are important to her because they help her express her feelings when she can’t tell people how she feels. An example is Gleason, a man who stole all of Hope’s and Addie’s money. Hope wrote him a letter of hate, confusion, and despair. She never read it till anyone until she asked G.T. to read it to her, which was very emotional to her to hear. I can relate to Hope because I too keep a journal to express my feelings in after a long day. I only do it when my day has been rough. Writing lets me tell my feelings that sometimes I can’t say out loud. Once I start writing and get really into it, it is hard to stop because I feel like I have to write everything down. Hope writes in unsent letters, poems, or in her diary to get her feelings out when it is hard to say.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is special to Hope because she can express her feelings without hurting anyone. She wrote a letter to Gleason which was really meaningful to her because it was too hard to say to him face to face. I can relate to Hope because I have a journal that I write all of my feelings in, so I don't take it out on other people. When I am angry or frustrated with someone I write down my feelings and it makes me feel much better. Hope also writes things such as unsent letters, scrapbooks, diaries, and poems to express her feelings.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope writes because it is a way she can let out her feelings but still no one else knows. She wrote that letter to Gleason which was meaningful because it let out her emotions that she was holding in about him, yet he didn't even know. I can somewhat relate to Hope about this, I don't write or anything but when I get angry or sad I will think through all that happened and try to forget about it and move on.
ReplyDeleteI think Hope writes things down to keep her frustration and struggles throughout her life on a piece of paper and not get too physically worked up about them. I think she also does this to remember where and what she has done throughout her life and so she can later look back at her childhood and remember her struggles and how she got through them. It’s almost like she is starting an autobiography at a young age. I can not relate to hope very much on paper so to speak but I keep medals/trophies and honors I have got throughout my childhood so I can remember my accomplishments and good things I did at an older age. But when I do look at those memories good and bad I always find a way to smile because I know I persevered through the good and bad to get where I am today.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope writes to express her feelings about people without anybody finding out. I also think that she writes to remember what has happen that was important in her life. I can't relate to Hope because I never write letters, keep journals or anything like that. I usually talk to people if I have an issue with them. Sometimes think about what is bothering me and try to move on.
ReplyDeleteI think Hope writes a lot because it helps her to vent her feelings. She writes stuff to express herself and I think also to understand herself better. She wrote the letter that she never so she can remember why she was mad and how mad she felt. I don't really relate to how she feels because when I write I don't really think about or express my feelings as much as she does. When I'm writing about an event I usually use facts and not my own opinions.
ReplyDeleteI think Hope writes to help her with her feelings. She writes about things that make her angry or sad. She wrote Gleason a letter about how angry she was with him. She wrote that she trusted him and now she could never forgive him for what he did to her and Addie. I can relate to Hope. Even though I don't write in a journal or diary, writing helps me when I'm sad or upset. I can write things down that I can't say out loud.
ReplyDeleteWriting is important to Hope because it is a reminder of the many people and events that she has or hopes to come across in her life. Her poem about a dry well represented her mother and that Hope continued her life without her, which was a life changing decision. She wrote letters to her friends in New York to so she won’t forget them, since she might never see them again. The scrapbooks that she keeps to show to her real father remind her to not lose hope when it comes to finding him. Writing about events causes me to write them in chronological order so it’s less confusing for me.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is important to Hope because she uses it to express herself. Hope doesn’t really have a lot of people to talk to because her mom only comes every once in a while and she doesn’t know where her dad is. Also she has moved a lot, so it is harder for her to to find friends that she can put her trust into. This makes it more difficult for Hope because most people talk about things with their parents or their close friends and Hope doesn’t have that option. Hope uses writing to state her feelings instead of verbalizing them. Another reason that Hope writes is for her dad. She wants to have all of her memories for her dad written down to share with him when he eventually comes. I don’t think that I can relate to Hope because I can easily talk to my mom and friends about anything. I would rather talk about things with people than write them down on paper. When I do write, I usually have to write down every detail about the topic so what I capture in writing is a complete story.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is important to Hope because with writing she has a way to express her feelings. I also think that she writes because if her real father does show up, she can talk to him about all of the things he has missed and all of the places she has moved to. I think the last reason she writes is she can say anything and not be judged by anyone. I can not really relate to Hope because i do not keep a diary or write about my feelings. When I start to write a paper in school I enjoy that and usually become very creative and imaginative. Plus i usually spend a great amount of time on that paper because I just can't stop writing.
ReplyDeleteI think it's important because she wants to get her feelings out without boxing or venting to someone else. I think it also is just a hobby or a pass time. Like when she wrote a letter to the guy that stole their money (can't remember his name), she wrote the letter but never sent it. When I write about something, all I feel compelled to do is make it as funny as possible without getting an F.
ReplyDeleteWriting is important to Hope because it is a way to express her feelings on paper. Like when somebody makes her mad or sad she might write a letter to them expressing her feelings but never send it. Another reason Hope writes is that she is hoping her father will show up and she wants something to show him. I can relate to Hope a little bit because when I want to express my feelings I kind of write little letters in my head. They just never get down on paper. The act
ReplyDeletewriting compels me to make up a million different fantasies in my mind and then pick one to write about. Sometimes I have so many ideas in my mind, I can't make a decision.
Writing is important to Hope for many reasons. It helps her to sort out her feelings and know why she feels what she does. In Hope's letter to Gleason Beal, she says the she's angry at him for taking the money, but mostly hates him for pretending to be a different person than he was. Also, when Hope wrote the poem about the well, it helped Hope move on and recognize that her mom would never be the mom she wanted. Another thing writing does for Hope is help her to remember. When she went through her life with G.T., Hope helped him to see her before they met and remember that life isn't completely bad. When I write, I think about things harder, and am able to see things clearer. I think of the way I arrange words to better express my feelings. When I'm done, I feel compelled to share what I've written.
ReplyDeleteWriting is very important to Hope. I think that she writes down significant moments, good or bad, in her life to make sure she remembers them. When Hope was so devastated that Gleason Beal ran away with her and Addie’s money, she wrote a letter telling Gleason exactly how she felt about it, but she never sent it. Hope also keeps scrapbooks, because when she meets her real father she can show him her eleven scrapbooks with big moments in her life. I can’t relate to Hope because I don’t keep a diary, write poems, or make scrapbooks. When I write something down, for example, notes when I study for a test, it helps me remember it. The act of writing compels me to remember the events I was writing about.
ReplyDeleteI think she writes only to relieve herself of the anger and grief she has gone through. She writes those passages about what she is going through, and does not leave out a single thing- I believe this is her own way of venting her feelings without anyone having to listen to her, carry her burden, ect. In the letter she addressed to Gleason Beal, it seemed as though she were talking just as much to herself, as she was Gleason; assuring herself that it was not worth letting Gleason’s actions get into her head.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Hope, in a way. If I am ever angry with someone, I say what I want to say to that person in my mind. I don’t keep anything out, I just “say” (think) what I’ve always wanted to say to them, and sometimes that is just as satisfactory as saying it out loud for them to hear. These kind of methods help you relieve the anger, without the help of others.
I think writing is important to Hope because it is a way to express herself. She writes about important events in her life, like moving and Gleason Beal stealing all their money. She makes scrapbooks to show her real father, which she eventually shows to G.T., which was another way she expressed herself through writing. I can't really relate to Hope because I don't write stuff down unless it is for school. There are a few things I write down and they are mostly to remind myself to do something.
ReplyDeleteI think Hope likes to write because she needs a way to express her feelings and she needs a way to remember everything. She wrote when she was mad at Gleason for taking all the money from her last restaurant. She couldn't go after him so she had to take it out in the writing. She writes about her moves too, like when she moved to Wisconsin. I can't really relate to Hope, I don't have letters, poems or a diary. I only write when it is necessary or I'm guaranteed to benefit; notes or homework. Unlike Hope I just hold my feelings inside or I forget about what happened.
ReplyDeleteWriting is so important to hope because without is she would not be able to express her feelings.Hope writes so much because she wants to express her feelings and her emotions but no talk about them. Hope growing up without much close family and really close friends, so she has no one to talk about her feelings with. She also writes as a way to get her anger out. For example, instead of going after Gleason Beal for taking their restaurants money, she wrote because going after him wouldn't have accomplished anything and she needed to get her anger out. I can not relate to Hope because I never write about my emotions or feelings. When I write about something it makes me look at the event in detail and sometimes it makes me want to write more.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to Hope because it lets her get out emotions she can't show to everybody, mostly when she's working. I noticed throughout the book how afraid Hope was to even think that Braverman liked her or send some letters to her friends that really showed how she felt every day. Another example is when her mother came and almost treated Hope like she wasn't her own daughter. Hope was going to cry, but she didn't want to ruin the happiness of the restaurant. I can kind of relate to Hope. I've tried to keep a journal of a diary, but I usually quit because its just too confusing to try to put most of my feelings down on paper.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to Hope because it lets her express her feelings without taking it out on other people. Also, by writing she doesn't have to tell anyone what she's really feeling inside. She wrote a letter to Gleason saying how mad she was and how she felt because it would be hard for her to have to tell him all of that in person. I can't relate to Hope because I never write and I just forget about it and move on when something isn't going good.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to Hope because it helps express her feelings and release all the anger and sadness inside of her. Hope used to box all the anger and sadness inside of her and take it out on a punching bag then she found writing. WHen Gleason took all the money from Addie's Hope wrote an angry letter to him saying how angry she was at him and telling him she would never forgive him,but she never sent them it was just to get the frustration out. Also, Hope would write and keeps scrapbooks, so that one day she will find her father and show him what she has done all her life. I can relate to Hope because I express my self by writing about creative story's in my own way.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is very valued to Hope, writing lets her express her life and feelings into something other than boxing or taking it out on other people. Since she writes, she can also send her writings to her closest friends about something she needs to talk about with someone. I think this is special to her because all of her stress can go away by just writing down how she feels and how her days are going. I can't relate to Hope because I don't write down my feelings or express myself in writings. Instead I work through it with others or simply move past it and wake up to a better day.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope writes because it helps her express her self and she will remember the significant things in her life good or bad. Also I think she writes incase her dad every shows up so she can tell him about her life and not forget some things. I can't relate to Hope in writing because I don't write outside of school work. So I can't get compelled by my writing.
ReplyDeleteHope either writes to express her feelings in a private way, or she wants to leave a mark on the world, and writing is what appeals to her. She also wants to write so in case her father comes and asks what she's been doing, she can whip out her scrapbooks and diaries and give him the scoop. I can sort of relate to Hope in the fact that I enjoy writing, but not for her reasons. What compels me to write is the fact that, I read all of these great books, and I think, "Well, I could do that.", and I just type away.
ReplyDeleteWriting is very important to Hope. its a way for her to keep in touch with her friends that live out of her reach and its also a way for Hope to vent her feelings. When Hope wrote that letter to Gleason Beal it was a way for her to express the way she felt toward what he did to herself and Addie. I can easily relate to Hope. If something is on my mind or bothering me, I sometimes right down how I feel. Writing things down kind of help me move on or forget a bad situation.
ReplyDeleteI think that writing is important to Hope because it allows her to let out her feelings and thoughts that she doesn't want to share. An example would be the letter she wrote to Gleason but never sent. She didn't write the letter so that she could send it she wrote it so that she could let out the anger and hatred she felt toward him for taking advantage of her and Addie. I can relate to Hope in the way that when something bad happens that is hard to move past I would write down how I feel and why I feel this way and letting out the anger or sadness helps to let go of it and to move on.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is so important to Hope because it is a way that she can get her feelings out without telling everyone. One example is the letter that she wrote to Gleason. Even though she never sent it, it still helped her get all of her feelings out. She just wrote the letter so that she could get rid of all of the mean feelings swirling around in her head. She let's everything out in a quiet way. I can't relate to Hope because I don't write to help with my feelings. If something isn't good I want to just try to forget about it.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is very important to Hope because it helps her express all of her feelings. If she couldn't do this she would just be mad at everyone all of the time. An example is when she wrote that letter to Gleason but she never sent it. I can't really relate to Hope because when I get mad or sad I don't write about it, I just forget about it after a while.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to hope because she didn’t have many friends, her mom was not there for her, and it was her way of leaving her mark. Hope’s mom gave her away when she was young and Hope moved around a lot so she couldn’t make many friends. I don’t really think I can relate to Hope but I can understand her ways. When I write, it compels me to express myself as clearly as possible and to provide the reader with details that I think are important; I want the reader to understand my point of view.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope uses writing to get out her feelings because she doesn't like to say them out loud. I think is important to her because she uses writing as one of the ways to keep her from putting the gloves back on. I don't think I can relate to Hope because writing letters and keeping a journal is something that I find hard to do. Whenever I write about an event I have to keep myself from making it more interesting. I think that my life is too boring compared to the lives of people I read about in books. Writing is a good think for Hope but for me, I don't think so!
ReplyDeleteI think writing is so important to Hope because ig gives her a way to express her feelings. If she didn't write then she would have to keep all of her feelings inside, and lets be honest, you can't do that forever. i can relate to her, i understand that you can get really mad, sad, or whatever it is that you are feeling, you need to express your feelings somehow. Writing compels me to be more creative and have more of an imagination than I normally would.

DeleteI think writing is very important to Hope because it her a chance to express her feelings and say write what she can't tell to other people. It also gives her a chance to express her feelings or how she feels about someone. For example she writes many letters to people about her feelings and never sends them. Or she writes poems in her diary about how she feels. I can not relate to Hope because when I am angry about something I find it very hard to write about it. So, instead I really think about whatever is bothering me or what is on my mind and try to just forget about it and try to move on to more important things in life.
ReplyDeleteI thing writing is a passion of Hope's. Writing down her feelings or concerns, instead of telling a friend or family member. I think she finds it easier considering she has moved around a lot not having a persistent life style. I can't really relate to Hope because i'm not much of a "writer." For me it helps to just forget about anything that's bothering me and move on to the big things in life.
ReplyDeleteI think writing helps Hope express who she is. She writes down her feelings to help her feel more comfortable and it feels like she doesn't have anyone to talk to. I feel like she writes a lot so that if her dad comes back she can show him all the amazing things that happened throughout her life when he wasn't there. I can't really relate to her because I don't write down any of my feelings down I just think about it, but I do know how she feels when she is writing.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is very important to Hope because it really lets her express her feelings and keep her greatest memories. If she didn't write her feelings on paper she would have to keep her sadness to herself other than expressing it. She also kept her moms letters because she wanted to remember her greatest memories. I cannot relate to Hope because I do not express my feelings in writing, I prefer to just let out my feelings and a good friend. The act of writing compels happiness and humor to me.
ReplyDeleteI believe Hope writes to express her feelings about other people and her life. I believe she started to write letters, and a diary because she wanted a safer and less violent alternative than boxing. Since boxing was her way to release her anger from the world before, when she stopped boxing she needed something to release that anger, and she chose writing. I also think that writing her life down helps her reflect on what has happened in her life and change her thinking on troubling problems such as what happened with Gleason Beal. When she wrote the letter for Gleason Beal she took out all of her anger and explained how she felt about what he had done to Addie and herself. When she read the letter to G.T. Stoop she realized how stupid she was for writing that letter and now when a bad situation comes Hope can deal with it differently and not let that anger ruin her life, like it had with Gleason Beal. I do not relate to Hope, but instead deal with my anger in other ways such as talking to a close friends or family member. When I write about an event writing compels me to go into great detail so if somebody reads it they will be able to know exactly what happened and really understand it.
ReplyDeleteHope writes down every event that seems to have an important meaning to her, or something that she wishes she could tell to other people. When she writes down the places she had been, she has a specific reason for that. Hope had said that when she finally finds her dad and he asked what she has been doing all her life she wants to be ready to show him. Hope has friends from all the different places that she has lived that she misses a whole lot. So for her to remember them she writes down things that she would think they would like to hear, or writes them letters about what is going on in her world; even if she doesn’t send them. I personally don’t journal or write down events in my life, but I know that my sister does. She journals every night on what happened that day. She says that she likes to write down what happened so she can look back on that day in her life and see what she was doing!
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to Hope because it allows her to let her feelings out that she can't tell to the person that they're about. When she wrote the letter to Gleason Beal she couldn't tell him that she was angry with him because he left and no one knew where he was. Also she writes down what she thinks/wants her dad to be like cause she hasn't met him and she doesn't know what he's like and she wants to be able to imagine what he's like. Also she writes so she can remember that day and how she felt when it happened. I can't relate to Hope because I don't journal or write things down in a book.
ReplyDeleteHope writes because that's one of the ways she can really express her feelings. Hope writes about her good experiences and the ones that mean the most to her. She writes letters to Gleason Beal. They are written out of anger because of what he did to her and Addie. Hope is good at writing her feelings. I can't really relate to Hope because I don't keep a journal or a diary.
ReplyDeleteHope writes so she can release her feelings into the paper and let her anger out. She writes letters the Gleason Beal (that she doesn't send) to get her anger out about how he used them and stole all of their money. I can relate to Hope because if I have something huge that makes me sad or mad I write it and it makes me calm.
ReplyDeleteWriting is important to Hope so she can express her thoughts and emotions. Writing helps her to remember feelings and events. Hope writes a letter to Gleason to express her anger at him for taking all of the money from her and Addie. She also writes letters to her friends, Harrison and Miriam to explain what is going on with G.T.’s campaign. I can relate to Hope’s need to write because my sister is a writer. She journals and writes all the time. I am not like that. When I do write I know it makes me think more about the details of the event and how I feel about it but it still doesn’t make me want to continue writing.
ReplyDeleteWriting is important to Hope because she gets to express who she really is and how she feels about the people that impact her life. For example, writing to Gleason Beal helps Hope express how she feels about him and what he did to her family. I can relate to Hope a little, in the sense that she sometimes feels the need to express her feelings. Although I don't have a journal to write down what happens each day. When writing, I think that it helps me look at the event or subject that I'm writing about through more detail.
ReplyDeleteI think Hope enjoys writing so much, because no one understands her enough to feel her pain. So, instead of telling people her pain, she writes it down. That's how Hope got her anger out from when Gleason Beal stole their money. The other reason Hope writes, is in case her father came home. I can not relate to Hope, because I can trust my friends with my feelings. Other times, I will try to keep it to myself, instead of writing it down.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope wrote so much in journals or scrapbooks because her feeling were so complex that she didn't really have a way to explain them to others clearly. If she were to write them down, then she could be as confusing as needed without getting confused. And plus, it was a productive way to express anger without hurting anybodies feelings or bodies. . . It's like when hope wrote the letter to Gleason Beal and never sent it. she needed to get her feelings straight weather he knew them or not. I can defiantly relate to Hope, I write in a journal a lot! It most defiantly helps me translate my feelings and it helps to help me simmer down my emotions. so i understand that Hope writes to help understand what shes feeling and calm the emotions.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is very important to Hope, because she needs to let out some of her feelings that she doesn't want to tell people. She writes about what she hopes her dad is like, since she has never seen him. Hope wants to be able imagine what her dad is like. Also, she wrote a letter to Gleason Beal, but never sent it. She wanted to know why he took all the money from the restaurant and moved somewhere that nobody could find him.. Hope writes about frequent moves and how she is feels about those moves. I can't relate to Hope, because I don't write about my feelings in poems, a diary or a journal. The only time I write things down is usually to take notes for up coming test. When I study for a test I am compelled to write as many details and examples that will make me get a good grade.
ReplyDeleteI think that Hope writes is so she can document things that have happened in her life. Hope said in the book that she made scrapbooks, kept diaries, and kept letters was show she could show her dad when he found her. Her biological dad never came to get her, but when G.T. adopted her she showed those to him. I think that she felt like when her dad came, biological or not, that he would need to know everything that ever happened when he was gone. I cannot relate to Hope in this way.
ReplyDeleteI think writing is important to Hope because she can express some of her emotions that she doesn't want to talk to people about. She writes about tons of different things such as, what she hopes her dad is like. Also, she wrote letters that she never sent. Like the one to Gleason Beal. Hope writes about frequent moves and how she feels about them. I can't relate to Hope that much because i dont right that much.
ReplyDeleteWriting and documenting her everyday life in a journal is vital to Hope because this way, she is able to express her feelings and concerns that she may have on her mind. It also seems like when ever she writes, this helps her calm her mind and answer questions that may be troubling her throughout the day. What's really cool is that she scrapbooks about her dream dad and if she'll ever meet him, that she will show him all about her life during the time he wasn't there. I can't really say that I really relate to Hope in the sense that she journals and writes. All in all, Hope's knack for writing really reflects her personality.
