Hope Was Here - Post #2
No political parties are mentioned in the novel. Why do you think I did this? Would mentioning Democrats, Republicans, or Independents have changed the story? If you had to guess what political party G.T. is a member of what would you guess and why?
I think political parties aren't mentioned because it would change the story. Putting political parties in the story would change the book by possibly switching who won the election. People might have an opinion on who should win, not from their personalities and ideas, but from which party they are in. If I had to guess which party G.T. was in I would guess an Independent party. I would say that because he is about making things right, and he didn't want more or less regulation on people's things and ideas.
ReplyDeleteI think the political parties aren't mentioned because it could change the story a whole lot. If it was mentioned it would of changed who voted for him because not everyone is going to vote for him if he is a different political party than they are. Also it could have changed how the readers would have liked the book because they may not be that political party. I would say he would probably be part of the Independents because he just wants the town to be better he doesn't have any specific opinions on any political parties.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties are not mentioned in this novel because it would change many opinions about the book. It would aslo make the reader bias. I think that if the book metioned democrats, republicans, or independents would have changed the story. An example is that if that she would have mentioned a political party, you would be comparing the values of the party to the values of the story. If I had to guess what political party G.T. was in, I would say democrats and independents. He wants equality for all, and progressive taxes like a democrat. He exudes this by telling the dairy to pay their taxes. As an independent though, he just wanted to make things right but not to change people's ideas.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties were not mentioned in the book because it’s a very touchy topic, and could easily lead to arguments about the book and in the book. Also, mentioning political parties would only appeal the book to a part of the population, because people might not want to read a book that contains other political parties other than their own. Talking about a certain political party would definitely change the story because then the author can't write freely about what G.T. wants and instead has to focus on writing about the interests of a certain political party. If I had to guess which political party G.T. was in, I would say he was in the Independents party because his campaign was based solely on his beliefs and he didn't seem like the type of person to care and promote his political party.
ReplyDeleteI think that the author didn't mention any political parties because the author would not want to take any sides. This story is not about the difference of political parties in my opinion, it is about Hopes desire to help G.T get elected, and to live up to her name. I think that it would change the story, because it would get to complicated. I would think that if G.T was in a political party it would be democrats, because he is trying to create jobs for the unemployed, and collecting taxes from business owners. Those are the traits for democrats
ReplyDeleteI think that the author didn't mention any political parties because it would change the whole story, and maybe in a bad way. Depending on the authors opinion, readers would have to fallow along with one party even if they didn't agree with it. I would probably say that G.T. is in the independent party because he doesn't really choose sides and all he wants to do is make helpful changes.
ReplyDeleteI believe the author didn't include political parties because it might have affected the audience that would read the book. If young children read this book, they might not understand political parties. Also, people with a different political party than G.T or Eli Millstone might not be as interested in the book. I think G.T would be in the independent party because he doesn't promote any certain political party.
ReplyDeleteI think that the author didn't mention any political parties, because mentioning them would lead to many biased opinions about the book, arguments about the book, etc. I think that mentioning political parties would dramatically change the story. If I had to guess what political party G.T. is a member of, I would guess that he is a member of the Independent party. I think that G.T. would be a member of the Independent party, because his campaign was based on his beliefs that were not influenced by people around him. Also, he doesn't seem like the type of person to care about and promote his political party in any way.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties were not mentioned in Hope Was Here because it might have changed the voters views on the candidates. They might not have voted for what they are doing or because of a certain personality but they might have just gone straight to their beliefs and wouldn’t give the other candidate a chance to speak their views. I would guess G.T. is an independent party because he isn’t “governing” by his beliefs on how the town should be ran, he is once again “governing” on what the people think should be done. That is a very unselfish thing to do. However this could also be costly. He could take all the thoughts of what the voters think should be done but it might not suit what he is attempting to do. He might in turn be doing the opposite of what the voters want him to do. This could have proved costly in the race and could have costed G.T. a few key votes in the election.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the reason political parties aren't mentioned in the story is to simply not include them. It is an easy plot to comprehend without choosing the sides of a Democrat or a Republican. Including these parties would completely change the storyline, plus, G.T. wouldn't even be allowed to enter the running to be mayor since he is neither of these parties. Although, if he did have to choose to be a Democrat or a Republican, I think that he would choose the Independent party, because every choice that he has made so far has been based on what has happened in the present, and he really puts other people thoughts and needs first.
ReplyDeleteI believe that they were no political parties mentioned in the book because the readers might have gotten confused because of the ages of the population reading it. I believe that if the author had included the political parties then the readers would have had a little more insight on why G.T. and Eli made the choices they made. It also might have made the book lead more towards one audience than another, like if G.T. were Republican then Democrats might not relate to it as much as Republicans. But since they did not use the parties, we do not know what side G.T. was on. But if I had to choose, I would choose Independent because he has qualities of being Republican and a Democrat. He wants to help others businesses by making Real Fresh Dairy pay their owed taxes (Democrat), but tries to give back to the people by help fixing roads and schools (Republican). Therefore if G.T. were on a political side, I believe that it would be Independent.
ReplyDeleteI think the author did not mention political parties because the readers could have become overwhelmed with all of the additional information about all of the different types of political parties. Also if the book would have focused more on one party than the other, there would be a limited amount of audience reading the book because of what they believe in. If G.T. were in a political party, I think he would be independent because he does not really seem to care about what party he is so he does not promote any type.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties aren't mentioned because it could change the outcome of the election if more people like one party over the other. If there were parties it can also effect how you feel and what you think about the book. I think that the best party for G.T. would be the Democratic Party because he tries to make every one happy.
ReplyDeleteI believe that political parties are not mentioned in the story because they are unnecessary and may change the views of the audience about different political parties if they are mentioned. If political parties were to be included, they might have caused a lot of change in the story. The viewpoints of the residents of Mulhoney could change about G.T. and Millstone, since they would be in different political parties. Also, if their viewpoints changed, the result of the election could be different as well. G.T. and/or Millstone might have had more dialogue about the goals of their political parties, causing G.T.’s original dream to change Mulhoney to become less important to the audience and the characters. I suppose that G.T. would be in the Independent party because he has no set goal, unlike the Democratic or Republican party, and can add on to what he has to do as his term as mayor continues.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties are not mentioned in this book because it would have made the book confusing and would have changed the book a lot. If it was mentioned it could have changed who voted for who because of their political parties. It could have changed the readers opinions if they aren't that political party. If I had to guess, I would guess that G.T. was part of the Independent party because he bases his campaign on his beliefs and he just wants to help the town.
ReplyDeleteI think that the author, Joan Bauer, didn’t mention political parties in this book because it would have been harder to follow things throughout the book. This would change the story a lot because if you know the political views from the beginning, you would probably pick sides. This would cause you to want either G.T. Stoop or Eli Millstone to win from the election for mayor from the time that G.T. said that he was running. Mentioning political parties would also make the story a lot more detailed. The author would have to explain the reasons to why people were making the decisions they were making. I think that G.T. is an Independent because he isn’t the type of person that would be involved in political parties. The decisions he makes are decided by what will help the town and the people the most.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties were not mentioned because it would of changed the book and it would of been harder to understand. If political parties were mentioned, the reader might have taken sides. They might support Eli Millstone more than G.T. Stoop because of his party. Adding parties to the story would have made it more confusing because there would a lot of little details. If I had to guess, I think G.T. would be Independent because all he wants to do is help the town.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties aren't mentioned because they would make the book a lot more confusing to people who don't really understand politics. If political parties were added the book could just become a way for the author to show if they think a certain political group is superior to all the others, and the readers might just take sides depending on what political group they favor. I think that G.T. would be Independent because he pursues what's right and is constantly trying to help the people of the town.
ReplyDeletePolitical parties aren't mentioned for many reasons in this book. For starters, if you asked me to pick a political party, I would not have a clue on which side to pick so if parties were mentioned that might confuse some readers. Another thing, say parties were mentioned and G.T. was a republican, if you read the book and liked the democratic side in real life, you would not cheer for G.T. and that would then make the book less appealing and less fun to read. If G.T. had to choose a side I would not know Which side he would choose. I suppose Independent sounds like G.T. though because instead of running against the opponent, like Democratic against Republican, he is running for the people of the town, like Independent.
ReplyDeletePolitical parties were not mentioned in the book because it may upset many of the reader’s belief in politics. By saying what political parties G.T Stoop and Eli Millstone belong too, the author would have to choose a party for each candidate. G.T. is considered the good guy, because the book is written from Hope’s point of view, who is a friend of G.T. The author didn’t make G.T a certain political party because they didn’t want to make it look like the good choice is Democrat, Republican, or Independent. If I had to guess which political party G.T. is a member of, I would say an independent because of his strong beliefs in changing the town’s ways for the good of the people.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason the author didn't want to mention any political parties was that she would appear to be in favor of one. For example, if G.T (The good guy) was a Republican and Eli Millstone (The bad guy) was a Democrat then she would be in favor of the Republican Party or vice versa. If I had to guess which party G.T belongs to, it would be an Independent Party because he has political traits of a Republican and a Democrat. Those traits make him in his own little, independent category.
ReplyDeletePolitical parties weren't mentioned in this book because the author wanted readers to root for G.T. This could be disrupted if G.T. was a member of a certain political party and the reader was not. Say G.T. was republican and the reader was democrat, the reader may not like G.T. If G.T. were to be on a side, I would say he is independent. G.T. focuses on the people's needs before his own and he doesn't do it for the money, like Eli Millstone. G.T. ran only for the people's justice, this makes him independent.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the author didn't put in any political parties because it would have made the book more bland and confusing. If the author were to put in political parties, the book would focus more on G.T. and his election than Hope. I think that if there were political parties in this book G.T. would be independent because before G.T. said he would be running for election, nobody would have guessed that he would run for mayor.
ReplyDeleteI think you left the political parties out of the story, because that might change the story for the worse. The author purposely make certain characters likable, and others unlikable; that is how they build a base for a story. If she would have mentioned which parties G.T. and Eli Millstone were for, it might have swayed the reader’s view on who’s likable, and who’s not.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to guess G.T.’s political party, I would choose the Democratic party; only because his plan was to collect money from a great big business (Dairy company) and use that money so that other less fortunate could benefit. These actions resemble a democrat’s.
I think no political parties were mentioned in the book because that might change some people's views about G.T. or Eli Millstone. You aren't supposed to like Eli for a reason and if they had mentioned political parties in the book you might like Eli and not G.T. If I had to guess which party G.T. was in I would guess Democracy. He wants to collect taxes from the dairy company and create jobs for the unemployed.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties aren't mentioned in the book because it might change who we think in our opinion on who is the better person. If they listed which political parties that G.T. and Eli where in u would probably vote for the guy thats on your political group. Plus when you list the parties it gives away some what that person is going for if they get mayor and what they want to do with the city. I think the book would be focusing on politics then on the main character hope. If I had to pick a political partie for G.T. it would be Independent, because he was talking about the problems that are in process of right know.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties are not mentioned because it might change peoples views on G.T. or Eli Millstone. Also I think that if political parties are in the book a limited amount of people would read it because of their beliefs. If i guessed what party G.T. was in I would say Independent because he doesn't seem to care what party he is in and he does not seem to promote his party at all.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties aren't mentioned into this book because it would change how the story is written a lot. Adding political parties could lead to arguments, different beliefs, and of course leading the readers into some confusion on whose side to be on. If I had to choose which political party G.T. would be in, I would choose Independents. The reason being, is because he doesn't promote his party and he basically wants to be mayor based on his beliefs for his town.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties aren't mentioned in this book because it may have influenced the way people think about the book and the author. I believe that mentioning specific political parties would have confused some young children and the author was trying to widen the range of ages of people who read her books. If I had to choose which political party G.T. is a member of, I would say Independent. This is because he does what he thinks is right and is not attached to a certain political party.
ReplyDeleteI don't think political parties were mentioned because people have so many different views and opinions about them. It could have changed the way people saw the author or the book. Some readers might not understand political parties, so it would make the book very confusing. I think G.T. would be a member of the independant party because I don't think he would stick to only one side and he doesn't really promote a side.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties aren't mentioned in the book because it would create a bias against one or the other. Also, G.T is meant to be liked, and if someone disagreed with his views, they might not like the character, or even the book as a whole. G.T is probably independent, because all he wants is to make the town a better place, and do what he thinks is right, not what a political party thinks is right.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties aren't mentioned in the book because it would change the whole story. If it was mentioned it would have changed who voted for who because of their political parties and opinions. Yes it would have the changed the whole story. I would guess G.T. is more of an independent type of person and would not really go with different parties because he is just not that kind of person. He likes doing that kind of stuff on his opposed to doing it in a big group.
ReplyDeleteI believe that it was smart to not mention the political parties for many reasons. It was a smart to do this because it could have swayed your opinion in the election or keep you from liking the book. I also think that it prevented you from not liking G.T. Stoop or liking Eli Millstone because of your personal opinion on politics. I think that G.T. Stoop would be a member of the Independent Party because he promotes his campaign on his personal beliefs and not the standard way the democrats or the republicans promote their campaign. If political parties were mentioned then there would be more detail about what G.T. wants to do with his time in office and how he only wants to help the town grow. Finally, having political parties might make it hard for younger readers to follow along with the story and know what each of the parties like to support and ideas they believe in.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was a better idea not to mentioned political parties because it would effect the plot of the story. It would have made the focus of the story on the election and not on Hope's journey to Wisconsin that changed her life. I think if G.T. Stoop was in a political party it would be the Independent Party because he doesn't choose sides or which party he is in.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties where not mentioned because it would have changed the story dramatically. One way it could have changed the books is the book would have leaned the books audience to one main group. An example is of Millstone was a democrat and the reader was republican the reader might not like the book as much as if it was a democrat reader. Another way is it might of overwhelmed the readers with all of this information. My last way is it would change the residents view of G.T. or Millstone. I believe is G.T. chose a political party it would be independent because I believe G.T. does not like picking sides or leaving people out.
ReplyDeleteI think no political parties were mentioned because it would’ve taken the focus off of the real point that Mr. Millstone was a deceitful mayor and that G.T was a good, honest man. If democrats and republicans were mentioned, I think it wouldn’t have had a big impact on changing the story but it would have an effect on the reader’s experience. For example, if the reader is a strong Republican and Mr. Millstone is republican, then the reader may not like G.T as much. I think G.T would be an Independent because he just wants to make a difference by doing the right thing regardless of the political party.
ReplyDeleteI think no political parties were mentioned because the focus of the story was on the bad, lying mayor Mr. Millstone and G.T. the good honest man with cancerous problems who is running for mayor. I think if political parties were mentioned it would have made it whatever party you support you vote for type of thing. The author did a good job not mentioning political parties because it show who the majority of the people wanted to win. Whether they were bribed or tricked or they just like the candidate. I think G.T. would be an independent do to his meaning for running for mayor, and his meaning was that he wanted to make his town right and not a lie, he wanted to make a good difference for all the people who live in Mulhoney.
ReplyDeleteI think no political parties were mentioned because I feel like it wasn't the focus of the story because it would of lead to arguments and it wold change the story with the election with G.T and Mr. Millstone. It was a good decision not to add political parties. I feel like G.T is an independent because he is doing what he think is better for the town. He is showing his beliefs and showing what he thinks should be done. G.T isn't choosing sides and agreeing or disagreeing with people about different things. He is an honest and caring person.
ReplyDeleteIf the author would have mentioned political parties it would make the story a bit confusing, and it could lead to more arguments. And in the story G.T. is not a person to argue. More to make peace. I think G.T. would be in the independent party because like I said before, G.T. is a peacemaker and is actually pretty independent himself.
ReplyDeleteI think that no political parties were mentioned in the book because then there would've been more bias and voters in the book might have voted based on the political party that the candidate is in instead of what they're saying. If G.T. where a party i think he'd be an independent party because when he decided to run for mayor he wanted to set things right and he wanted to make a difference in Mulhoney.
ReplyDeleteI believe that no political parties were mentioned in "Hope was here" because people may have been drawn to voting for someone because of their party. I think if G.T. where a member of a party, he would be apart of the independent party. He wants to share what he believes in and he wants nothing to stop him from making Mulhoney great.
ReplyDeleteI think if political parties were mentioned the story would be way different. It would be more bias and they would be arguing about politics instead. Voters would be voting on which politic group they liked and the people that were arguing wouldn't be so serious. I think if G.T. was part of a party he would be part of the Independence party. I think he would be part of this party because he wants to make everything right in Mulhoney.
ReplyDeleteIf political parties were mentioned in the story it would of changed the book a lot. I think it would have changed the book because G.T. would have lost a lot of voters because people vote on what party his is in and not about speaking. I think G.T. would be in the Independence party because he is trying to make everything right and fair in Mulhoney.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties weren’t mentioned because the message in the story was focused on the personalities and actions of the two men running for office and not their political views. The race focused on the good of G.T and the unfair and lying behavior of Millstone. By mentioning the party I think people would have changed their opinion on the outcome. I would guess G.T. to be a member of the Independent party because his goal is to make things right for all. He is concerned about treating everyone fairly and the good of the whole town.
ReplyDeleteI don't think political parties were mentioned, because it could change the story. The story is mainly a race between personalities, not parties. The race was also between health. If the race was on political parties, people would have voted for the party they wanted, not the person they wanted. If Millstone had won the race because of his party, the teenagers wouldn't have overwhelmed him about lying. Eli Millstone wouldn't have resigned, because he would have had no reason to. I would say G.T. would be part of the independents party, because he doesn't choose favorites, he just wants to make beneficial changes to the town.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that any parties were mentioned, for the purpose to not interfere with the book, because that is not the point of the story. If you start mentioning parties opinions get involved and get in the way of what the author is really trying to get across. If they say that G.T. was a Democrat people may get mad because they are Republicans or Independents. I think if G.T. had a party it would be Independent because he wants things to be right and has certain things in mind. All that he wants to do as mayor is get Mulhoney the best it can be.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the author mentioned political parties because it probably would've changed the point of the story. I think the book was not mainly based on politics, but mostly on the personality and story of G.T, his diner and Hope and Addie. If political parties were a part of the story, I think the story would've changed. I think G.T could've not been as favored by readers if he was presented as a member of a certain party. I think G.T would be an Independent or democrat if he was a member of a party. I think this because he isn't as focused on politics as much as he is focused on the well being of the town. He also wants to collect taxes from the big dairy company.
ReplyDeleteI think that putting political parties in the book would have changed the book. Also I think the author did not want to take sides on political parties. I think by putting political parties in the book it might have changed who won the election and how people liked the book. People might have based their vote on what party they were in, not by their ideas and opinions. I think G.T. would be in the Independents because he just wanted to make the town a better place and help people living there have better lives.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they mentioned political parties because it would have changed the story. The book was not about politics, it was more about the story of G.T, Hope and Addie, and the diner. If political parties were mentioned, I think some of the readers would think differently about him depending on which party they were. I think G.T would be a Democrat because he tried to create jobs for the unemployed, and collect the taxes.
ReplyDeleteI think that if they put in political parties in the book it would have changed the story. The overall story was about the town and what was best, not the politics. It was also about G.T, Addie, and Hope. It was about the diner and the people that were at the diner. The vote would have changed most likely because people will choose what they like from the political parties. i think G.T would have been in the independent party because he was trying to help the town and get whats best for it.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties weren't mentioned because it would have changed the story. It would have made the story a lot harder to read and it would have lost some of it's meaning. If I had to guess what party G.T. was I would guess he is an independent because he was just trying to help the town and the people.
ReplyDeleteI think political parties weren't mentioned in this book because it would have changed the whole story. The story was about Hope, Addie and G.T. Also what was best for the town, not a bunch of politics. Another reason I think they were left out, is the story would have lost all it's meaning. I feel that G.T. would have been in an independent party, because he just wanted what was best for the town and all it's citizens.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties are not mentioned in this book, because the story would have changed. The people would not have voted on what the candidates had to say, but would have voted for the candidate running from their political party. If G.T. was in a party, I think that he would be part of the Independent Party. I think that he wanted everything to be equal. He did not want to pick a side on a problem. He just wanted everybody to be happy and make helpful changes to the city.
ReplyDeleteI think that political parties are not mentioned in this book because it would be biased and change the way you were currently feeling about this book. It could also make the book a lot more confusing, trying to figure out which political party each character stands by. Also, by adding which political party each character is in, could change the relationships in the book. If G.T. were in a political party, he would apart of the Independent Party because he isn't so much as concerned about getting specific votes but more helping everyone no matter what and fulfilling their needs. He just wants whats best for the town.
