Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes- Post #2

Eric and Sarah Byrnes call their underground newspaper Crispy Pork Rinds, a name which had personal significance for them and which Eric later finds himself explaining to Ms. Barker, the school secretary.  Explain the significane of the the title.

If you and your best friend/s were to create and underground newspaper, what would you name it? What three school issues would you address in your paper’s first edition? Why?

  1. If I had an underground newspaper with my friends I would call it Bx3 because I have two best friends and one of them is blonde and the other is a brunette. I am brunette myself so that makes three B’s. Eric and Sarah’s underground newspaper is called Crispy Pork Rinds because, what Eric says, “Sarah is crispy, I am a porker, and rinds are the part that’s left that no one pays attention to.” The three school issues I would cover if I had an underground newspaper would be: Longer recess, healthier lunches, and no assigned seats. The longer the recess the more time to get to know people in your grade better by talking to them more because you are not in class. Healthier lunches turn to healthier people, which is always a good idea. Having no assigned seats results in not complaining on who you sit by and getting along with the person you sit by.

  2. If i had an underground newspaper i would call it lazy because me and my friend are always lazy when it comes to some things. Eric and Sarah's newspaper is called crispy pork rinds because "Sarah is crispy,I am porker and rinds are the part that's left and no one pays attention to." In my newspaper the three things i would cover would be longer lunch or recess, healthier lunches, and the kids get more options to do certain things in class. The longer the lunch or recess the more people could make new friend and be social. The healthier lunch would help the kids make good decisions on what they should eat and it still taste good. Kids should get a choice to do certain things in class for example if there is a game planned they should vote and see how many people want to play the game and how many don’t to see if they should play the game or not.

  3. If I had an underground newspaper with my best friend, we would call it Twins 101, because we have so much alike, that we sometimes even say the same things at the same time. Eric and Sarah Byrnes named their newspaper Crispy Pork Rinds because he said, "Sarah Byrnes is crispy, I'm a porker, and rinds are the part that's left-that no one pays attention to." In the first edition of my newspaper, I would cover longer lunch/recess, more variety in choices for electives, and healthier, but better tasting lunches. Longer lunch/recess would mean we could catch up with friends we don't normally see in class, and we could get all our energy out by playing basketball or gaga ball. More variety in choices for electives would mean we could learn things that actually interest us, if it’s something that interest us, we would pay more attention and get better results. Healthier, but better tasting lunches would mean we would still be getting all the nutrients we need, but we will enjoy doing it in the process.

  4. If I had an underground newspaper with my best friends I would call it "The Crazy Talk" because all of my friends are crazy, fun people. Sarah Byrnes and Eric named their newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds" because Eric said, "Sarah Byrnes is crispy, I'm a porker, and rinds are the best part that's left that no one pays attention to." The three issues that I would cover in my newspaper would be longer recess, more class choices, and healthier lunches. I would cover longer recess and lunch because that is the only time in school hours when you can interact with friends, get your energy out, and meet and talk to new people. I would also talk about more choices for classes because most kids don't like their classes so they don't pay attention or don't do their homework, and then they fail or do bad in the class. If kids get more choices for classes they can choose a class that they want and think that they will like, and actually participate in the class/assignments. Another issue I would include would be healthier lunch choices. Providing healthier lunches at school means that kids get nutrition they need that they might not get at home. Also, it might help kids not become overweight or obese if they have no choice to eat healthy food.

  5. The title refers to Sarahs crispy face and hands, and Erics porkiness, and the fact that they're so interesting. (just a guess on the last one). If I had a newspaper, it would be called, "PRESS X TO NOT DIE". this refers to my love of gaming and the column on the latest murders. The main topics would be the murders of course, a section on video games that aren't the same old FPS's you see today, and I'd have a section where we actually play video games that have been reviewed as complete garbage for the video section. (It's a digital newspaper)

    1. I'm pretty sure murder isn't exactly a school issue.

  6. If I had a underground newspaper the title would be "KMA-doubled". It would be this because two of my best friends names start with a M and K and mine starts with a A. I added the double because everything we do is doubled, double the fun double the laughs and double the best times. Eric and Sarah Byrnes named there newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds." Eric said it was this because "Sarah is crispy, I'm a poker and rinds is the stuff thats left out that no one pays attention to." In my paper the three things I would cover would be, healthy lunches, no seating arrangements, and longer passing time. I choose those three because I think are school needs better tasting lunches that are good for you. I also think that when you can sit by who you would like you feel a little more comfortable and relaxed, which I think is a good attitude for taking test and learning. Lastly I think if we were to have longer passing time you wouldn't feel as rushed and wouldn't forget things on accident.

  7. If I had an underground newspaper with some of my friends, I would call it "This Is No Average Newspaper." We wouldn't talk about the average things a real newspaper so the name fits like a glove. The school issues we would address in our first paper would be bigger lockers at the high school so you don't need to squish all of your textbooks in it, longer time between classes so you can stop by your locker and be able to get to class on time, and smarter and healthier choices for lunch so people start eating better. Eric and Sarah Byrnes named their newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds." In the book, Eric says, "Don't you get it? Sarah Byrnes is crispy, I'm a porker, and rinds are the part that's left-that no one pays attention to."

  8. The title stands for sarah and all of her burns that she has, how Eric is over weight, and rinds the leftover part that know one cares about. If me and my friends had a newspaper I would name it the Sports Talk because we would't care about all the other news we would just talk about the sports. One issue I would say is to actually use the scoreboards on the soccer/ football fields across the street from the school. They just seem like a waist because they never use them. Second I would talk about how they should paint the lines on the grass more often. Finally I would talk about fixing the tennis courts because they are cracking and falling apart.

  9. If my best friend and I made an underground newspaper, I would probably call it "Vamp & Drag" (or something like that). One reason why is because I love dragons and mythology, and was born in the year of the dragon. Another reason is because my best friend is always cold and it's her favorite mythological creature. One issue addressed would be the time between classes, because if you're new to the school, get lost easily, or need time to get things from your locker, you would need more time to get to class without getting in trouble. Another issue would be that lunch periods should be longer so people could be able to finish their food, then be able to work on extra credit, school projects, and homework. The last issue would probably be the locker size, because if you don't have space for a science project in your locker, you're going to have to bring the project to every class until it's time for science.

  11. If my friends and I had an underground newspaper it would probably be fun days because we always try to have as much fun as possible. The name of the newspaper is significant because Sarah's crispy, Eric's porky and the rinds are everyone left over. The three school issues that I would address would be healthier lunches, homework time, and more time between each class. The lunches could be healthier so kids could develop good eating habits and not eat fatty foods. A lot of kids have after school activities so it would be good to have homework time during classes. It would be nice to have longer hall time so you can talk to your friends a bit before class and you wouldn't be having to run to get to your next class.

  12. Sarah Byrnes and Eric made an underground newspaper to bash on people who were mean to them. They called it Crispy Pork Rinds because Sarah Byrnes is crispy, Eric is porky, and the rinds are everyone that no one pays attention to. If I had an underground newspaper with my friend I would call it Einstein and Twain because one of us is good at science and math while the other is great writer. I would add in topics about passing time, the dress code, and snacks. Passing time because some classes are across the building and some teachers don't let your out on time so then you have to hustle over there which might cause you to forget something you may need. I would change the dress code because some girl's clothing doesn't fit the code which makes them defy it and get in trouble, but this happens so much that some teachers just give up. Lastly, I think that we should have a snack time because without it, some kids get drained and don't do as well as they could in classes. Eric and Sarah Byrne's newspaper let them speak their minds while keeping it secret and not getting in trouble, I believe that that is what our newspaper would do.

  13. If I had an underground newspaper with my best friends, I would name it "No one sits alone". I would name it that because my friends and I would always make sure that no one would sit alone. Eric and Sarah Byrne's paper is called "Crispy Pork Rinds" because "Sarah is crispy, Eric is porky, and rinds are the part that's left that no one pays attention to. " The first issue we would cover would be to make sure that no one sits alone at lunch, because they could feel left out. The next issue we would cover would be separating 8th and 9th graders at lunch from the 10th, 11th and 12th graders, to help them fit in. Lastly we would cover letting the 8th graders have the first day of school to themselves, so they can feel comfortable in the school and everyone else can come to school the next day. Eric and Sarah Byrne's paper let them express their feelings on everything, where our paper lets us express our opinions on what should be improved on the school.

  14. Sarah and Eric named there underground paper "Crispy Pork Rinds" because according to Eric, "Sarah is crispy, Eric is porky and the rinds are the part that no one pays attention to. If I had an underground newspaper I think I would call it The Inside Scoop because my friends and I would find out the inside scoop about everything. There would also be a couple issues I would mention in the article. One of them is to let 8th graders try out for Concert Choir and Mad Jazz. There are some kids in the 8th grade that have exceptional singing talent and would like to show it in a more advanced group. Another issue is I think high schoolers should get a nap time. Because teenagers actually need to take naps in the day more than preschoolers. Lastly there should be more healthy food in the lunchroom. Studies have shown that jail food is healthier than school food. It is important that we keep healthy and hope the school knows that.

  15. It was called crispy pork rinds because they wanted to portray a clever way of acknowledging they had flaws, and weren't popular. If I had an underground newspaper I would call it "The Daily Dirt" because number one, it's an underground newspaper, number two, it give information on people (albeit not entirely true information), and three, it's 11:00 PM and that was the first thing that popped into my mind. I suppose I would make some witty jokes about cafeteria food, crack jokes at people underneath my safe shell of anonymity, and ask for more study time.

  16. Sarah and Eric named their newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds" because Sarah is crispy because of all the burns on her face and Eric is porky (overweight) and rinds are the left overs that do not matter to other people. If I had a secret paper, i would call it Sports times because we all care about sports. The first issue i would discuss in the paper would be re-doing the locker rooms at Pond Arena because they are old and small. The second thing I would write about is actually using all of the scoreboards at the the High School soccer fields. The final thing I would talk about would be getting new gym floors because the old ones are worn out. I would discuss these issues because I care about all sports.

  17. The newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds" means a lot to Sarah and Eric. Starting with the title, the first part, crispy, represents Sarah and her scars that are burnt to a crisp. The second part, pork rinds, represent Eric and his obesity. If me and my friends made a school newspaper I would want to call it "School Tribune". The three things it would talk about is the school sports teams, because everyone likes to hear about sports. The lunches and how they need to be better, because the lunches are horrible. Lastly, it would talk about news around the school like upcoming events, new things at the school, and other stuff like that, because every newspaper needs stuff like that.

  18. Eric and Sarah Byrnes named their newspaper Crispy Pork Rinds, which was significant to him and Sarah Byrnes. He explained by, “Sarah is crispy, I am a porker, and the rinds are what is left that no one pays attention to.”
I would name my newspaper “Running from Snowy Green Fuzz,” because it represents the sports we both play. Running represents Cross Country, Snowy represents snowboarding, and Green Fuzz represents tennis. Our first edition would include Student Prep/Homework time, better lunches, and weekend homework.

  19. Sarah and Eric's newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds" expresses who they are or used to be. Crispy represents all the scars all over her from her dad and the pork rinds represents Eric with all the fat that he had. If my friends and I had a newspaper I would want to call it The Tie breaker because it represents my favorite sport which is tennis and that tie breakers are always intense and they are always on the spotlight during a match. The newspaper would talk about the focus on the major events that's going on with sports and the major events that's happening during the school.

  20. If me and my friends made a newspaper it would probably be called A Pentagon Shaped Tub. We would call it this because it basically describes our best inside jokes. Sarah and Eric named theirs "Crispy Pork Rinds" because it said who they are but it didn't spell out that it was by Sarah and Eric which is kind of like their personalities. They are basically the people who everyone knows who they are but they don't go around trying to get attention. Eric said that "Sarah is crispy, I am a porker, and the rinds are what is left that no one pays attention to." The three things that would be covered in our newspaper would probably be longer lunch/recess, healthier lunches, and more homework time. We need longer lunches because it is basically the only time we get to socialize during the school day and it gives us a chance to get out of a desk and wake up a little bit more. Healthier lunches would benefit everyone because then we have more energy to last throughout the day. More homework time would also be covered because almost every plays a sport or two. Usually for me I have one of my sports after school then piano or church or another sport so I have to stay up late to finish my homework.

  21. If I had an underground newspaper with my best friend, it would be named the MSHC, because MS stands for middle school and HC stands for hair changers. The reason for this name is because, all through out middle school, my best friend and I always changed our hair. Sarah Byrnes and Eric's newspaper was called "Crispy Pork Rinds because Eric said, "Sarah Byrnes is crispy, I'm a porker, and rinds are the best part that's left that no one pays attention to." If I were to address three school issues in my first edition, I would address the amount of homework, recess time, and healthier lunches. I would adress these three because, sometimes the amount of homework we get after being in school for 7 hours is a lot; the amount of recess time we get isn't nearly enough we need to be able to communicate with all the people we would like to get closer to outside of class time; and healthier lunches, because healthier is always the best bet.

  22. To answer your first question, the title was called "Crispy Pork Rinds" because, Sarah Byrnes is crispy, Eric in the pork, and the rinds are all that is left over. My answer to the second question is that my newspaper with my friends would be called The Highlights. It would be called this because both me and my friend have natural highlights in out hair. Our first matter of business would be the bullying problem we have noticed on our bus. Our newspaper might not be as harsh as "Crispy Pork Rinds", But I would make sure the matter was put into perspective.

  23. The newspaper "Crispy Pork Rinds" mean a lot to Sarah Byrnes and Eric Calhoune because they can speak up to the people who were mean to them while staying anonymous. The significance of the paper is the meaning behind the title. The meaning behind the title is “Sarah is crispy, I’m a porker and the rinds are the part that's left and no one pays attention to." I think that if I had an underground newspaper with my best friend it would be called swimmer problems , because most of my closest friends are from my swim team . The first three issues would be about being left out because I sometimes see people being left out. The second one being about popularity because, sometimes people judge people on what they wear and what they do. Lastly I would address the lunches having super small lunches is not good for the people who do sports.

  24. If I were to create an underground newspaper I would name it “Happy With Who You Are”. In my first addition I would address the school issues of not leaving anyone out, taking chances, and being a leader and not a follower. I think it’s important that the feelings of everyone always be remembered. It’s hard to step away from the group but the feeling of helping someone who is feeling left out makes me feel so good. I would also talk about how it’s important to go out of your comfort zone. By taking a chance and trying something different you grow and learn a lot. It’s okay to be a follower but it’s also important to be a leader at times too. My newspaper would touch on all these issues because I think being happy with who you are is very important. I was reminded of this in this story.

  25. The newspaper "Crispy pork rinds" is very important to Sarah and Eric because it is their chance to stand up to the people who bully them. Crispy is Sarah, Pork is Eric, and the Rinds is are all the left overs. If I created an Underground newspaper I would name it "The hockey news" it would be about the hockey news like the NHL or the varsity team and so on.

  26. The reason Eric and Sarah named the newspaper Crispy Pork Rinds is because in the book it says, "Sarah Byrnes is crispy, I'm a porker, and rinds are the best part that's left that no one pays attention to." And if I were to start a newspaper with my best friends, I would name it "One of a Kind" because my best friends are one of a kind and that's why were best friends. And for my three topics, I would cover school lunches, being left out, and maybe all the things that are happening in the school.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The significance of Crispy Pork Grinds is that when Sarah put spaghetti on herself when she was young she became crispy. Eric is the Rinds and that means left overs. If i where to create a underground magazine it would be called "The eyes of students". It would talk about the students point of school. My first topic would talk about what the students liked and disliked about school. My second topic would be about what students think about sports and how are school teams are doing. My last article would be about outstanding students and what they have done to change this community.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If I had an underground newspaper with my bestfriends it would be called "Silent Gigglers". Because without each other we are quiet and so what shy but when we are together all we do is laugh at everything. Eric and Sarah's newspaper is called "Crispy Pork Rinds" because "Sarah is crispy, I am porker, and rinds are the part that's left and no one pays attention to." The three school issues we would discuss recesses, lunches, and gym time. We would talk about longer recesses so students who don't see their friends in class can see them in recess. We would discuss having healthier lunches. and extending gym class so each student gets enough exercise.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Crispy Pork Rinds are significant to Sarah and Eric because it was their chance to confront those who targeted them. I also think it was very clever of them to put some special and personal meaning into the title. The part of the "Crispy" title stands for Sarah's skin condition, making her look like she was burned. The "Pork" part of the title stands for Eric and him being overweight.
If I were to have my personal own paper, I would call it the "Quiet Laughs" because me and my bestfriends are always quiet during the school day and when we are together we never seem to be quiet and were always laughing and making jokes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If I had an underground newspaper, it would most likely be called, "In, Out, FAIL" representing a volleyball related inside joke between my best friend and I. Though it would as well represent the idea of a brief, short, few articles on the main idea of the problems. Problems like, things within classes, what students would call "bad" decisions made by the school, and then a column or two just on what's going on at the time to keep people up to date. Eric and Sarah's newspaper represents their relationship as Sarah being crispy because of her scars, and Eric being the "pork rinds" from his weight.
